W-FL BOCES SLS
September 2020
A note from the Director
Welcome back! While this has been a unique start to the school year, hopefully you are all starting to develop and maintain new routines, protocols and strategies that support yourselves, your students, staff and families in remote, hybrid and in-person school models.
SLS would like to introduce Gretchen Pulver to the region! Gretchen is the new librarian at Naples Elementary School; welcome, Gretchen!
Thank you for those of you who replied to the Zoom Room survey, SLS will start offering Zoom Rooms again in October. Most participants indicated their preference for after school sessions, so we are starting with Zoom Rooms once a week on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30pm. Participation in professional development and group conversations can be a helpful and informative way to stay connected with peers both near and far.
SLS is working to update membership information & develop dates/times for online 2020-2021 SLS Council and Communications Coordinator meetings; please stay tuned!
Upcoming PD & webinars:
W-FL Elementary Library Group: October 7th
School Library Journal Day of Dialog: October 15
Beyond Diversity 101: Micro-inequities, Implicit Bias & Equity: October 21
Many of us have been involved with diversity training that focuses on cultural difference and respecting all perspectives. While this is a good start, we cannot move toward true equity in our workplaces, organizations, and personal relationships until we address historical and institutional inequality. In order to address the myriad ways that certain people are marginalized based on social identities such as race, gender, disability, religion, class, sexual orientation, etc, every one of us needs to understand our own identities, how we all demonstrate bias that is often unconscious, and how we are all capable of moving toward equity.
W-FL Secondary Library Group: October 21
Remote & hybrid library environments: Oct 14
In this session, participants will learn different ways that school librarians can adapt their everyday instructional and library management practices for today's hybrid and remote learners. Participants will be introduced to a variety of resources and will work in small groups to identify how they can implement these resources and/or guidance to meet the changing needs of students, staff and families.
