School Site Council (SSC) at Alamo is a committee of teachers, parents, and school staff that works with the school principal to plan for the needs of the school. A change in the law in 2019 decreased membership count from twelve to ten. We are a ten-member committee as we have more than 300 students. Council members generally serve two-year terms with half of the members beginning in even years, and the other half in odd. The staggered terms lend stability to the council, allowing new members to acclimate.
A significant duty of the SSC is to develop and then annually update the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), a formal plan for the school that satisfies both state and federal program requirements. It is a school's roadmap used to create and explain the plan to improve student academic success.
The SPSA identifies a school's strengths and weaknesses concerning student achievement and documents the SSC's strategies to close the gaps. Working with the principal, the site council may recommend ways to allocate the school's spending budget to improve outcomes. The committee will look at academic assessments, such as standardized tests and writing and math assessment data. Last year's SPSA focused on improving 4th-grade math, increasing literacy skills for students with an IEP, and changing a School Climate target.
The SSC may also review attendance, suspension data, and student and family-school climate survey data. Based on that data, the council sets goals and identifies the priorities, and determines what programs, services, and other resources can help a student population to reach these goals. They also monitor the expenditures that fund these programs and services.
If you are interested in learning more about student achievement, school policy, programs, and budgets, please consider joining a 2-year term on our School Site Council (see below). Members are chosen by their peers — that is, teachers are selected by other teachers, and parents by other parents.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Salazar
