FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
At the September 13th Board of Education work session, the Clinton School Board had questions regarding the status of Standards-based Grading. I believe it is fair to say that all groups of stakeholders in the Clinton School District (students, teachers, parents and community members) have questions and concerns on whether SBG is having a sufficiently positive impact on the level of instruction and student learning and is accomplishing the goals initially established by the district. Consistency between classrooms, grade levels, and buildings is also a worthy concern. I also believe it is fair to say that in some classrooms and grade levels across the district, this best-practice has taken off and is having the intended and desired impact that was hoped for. Nonetheless, this approach with other courses and grade levels has been more challenging than anticipated.
During the September Board work session, the Board of Education requested an objective and unbiased presentation on the status of Standards-based Grading implementation in the Clinton School District. The Board requested this report be presented to them in open session of the September 25th Board of Education regular meeting to allow interested students, parents and community members to learn more about this process. Because she is the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, I delegated this task lead to Dr. Joana King.
Based on Dr. King’s report, the Board of Education will either make a motion to continue the same course or redirect our efforts to ensure we take the necessary steps for successful implementation. It is also very possible that they will ask me for a recommendation, and I will be prepared to do so. Dr. King and I have dedicated significant time in research and fact-finding to better understand the successes, challenges and opportunities for improvement of this implementation process.
We have learned there are varying opinions amongst all of our stakeholders regarding the implementation of Standards-based Grading in the Clinton District and all of those opinions are valid. Our teachers and administrators have been dedicated and worked very hard to make Standards-based Grading effective in their classrooms and buildings. We have also learned that there are still struggles with coherence and implementation and that teachers are committed to making any necessary changes to ensure that we establish the highest level of student learning possible for our children. Our goal is high student achievement using the best possible strategies available.
Dr. King and I have witnessed excellent work from both teachers and students and are impressed by their flexibility and dedication to the highest standards of education. At this time, if I am called upon by the Board to make a recommendation, my recommendation will be grounded in what I think is in the best interest of Clinton School District students and teachers.
As always, feel free to call, email, or stop by if you have any questions.
Dr. Adam Willard
Superintendent of Schools
KING'S KORNER
Dear Clinton Students, Staff, Parents and Residents,
Welcome to another new school year! The 2017-18 school year promises to be a great one. I would like to take this opportunity to say I am honored and very excited to be your Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Since being here, I have learned the tradition of excellence that exists is due to the wonderful people of our community and the hard work of our students and staff.
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little but about my family and myself. I have two adult children. My oldest son attends University of Florida and my youngest attends Northwestern. My sons are far from perfect but they are good people. I tell you this because my experiences as a mother have helped to shape me as an educator and a leader.
I deeply believe in a quality and comprehensive education for all students. I take very seriously that you have entrusted the young people of this community to our care and expect our fine staff to give their best day in and day out.
My mission as your Assistant Superintendent is also my passion and is the reason I do what I do. That is, to maintain and grow a rigorous teaching and learning environment that provides every student with a sense of belonging while helping students to grow intellectually, emotionally and socially. It is critical to every student’s success that they graduate from high school with the habits of mind and skills necessary to pursue and achieve their goals and dreams.
Finally, I want to thank all the citizens of Clinton who have accepted me and made me feel at home since the day I arrived. I look forward to serving you and the community.
With great pride,
Joana King, Ed.D
Go Cardinals!

"IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL" ARTICLES
Health Occupations
Submitted by: Clinton Technical School Director, Jake Fowler
There is no denying that the fastest growing labor markets are dominated by occupations related to health care. The United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics released data on the fastest growing occupations in the United States. Of the 20 occupations with the most growth, 13 of them were in health related fields. The opportunities for employment are enormous and very broad. What a great message for us to send students, and believe me, we do!
Each year, the Health Occupations Program at Clinton Technical School is at full capacity. The number of students we serve provides us an enormous opportunity to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to compete for jobs and be successful in post-secondary studies. If all goes as planned, our students will return to our labor market and be contributing citizens in our communities.
Students’ appeal to this program goes much deeper than the labor statistics. As with our other Career and Technical Education programs, we have an exceptional teacher preparing the Health Occupation students. Barbara Houk became a registered nurse in 1988 and has been teaching at Clinton Technical School for 23 years. Continually improving her teaching capacity, she rose to the top becoming the Clinton School District Teacher of the Year in May of 2017. Additionally, students are exposed to real world learning experiences through a long standing partnership with Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Golden Living Center, and Moreland Daycare. More recently, we have extended opportunities to place students in even more specialized facilities such as Gillis Family Dentistry and Golden Valley Animal Clinic.
Barbara Houk, Health Occupations Teacher
My students will have over 100 clinical hours as a Health Occupations 1 student, and all clinical hours as a Health Occupations Intern, 2nd year student. The staff at the clinical sites go above and beyond when assisting students to explore their opportunities in the healthcare field. It is wonderful to see my former students realizing their dreams as health care professionals, and helping my current students to be able to realize theirs’. I always teach my students to have a passion for whatever career choice they make, and I model that through my passion for teaching my Health Occupations students.
Our students will have the opportunity to receive four certifications their first year in Health Occupations. They will become certified in Dental Varnishing through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, become certified in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers and Basic First Aid through the American Heart Association, and become certified as a Nursing Assistant, CNA, through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
Jodi DeLong - Windsor High School
My experience in the Health Occupations Program at Clinton Technical School has given me many opportunities to expand my education. I have gained a lot of knowledge in the healthcare field to help me with my future career. There is a student leadership organization at this school called SkillsUSA. The classes participate in competitions related to their program areas. I was entered in the Health Occupations Knowledge Bowl and Basic Healthcare Skills Competitions for the West Central District. I received first place at Districts in both competitions, and I advanced to the Missouri State SkillsUSA Competition. I could only compete in one competition at State because they were at the same time, so I chose to do Basic Healthcare Skills and received 8th place in the state of Missouri.
Last year, I was in the classroom learning but also doing many clinicals, including dental varnishing and health screenings. We also had the opportunity to go the hospital, a daycare, and a nursing facility. At the end of the year, I became a Certified Nursing Assistant, and this year I am able to go to the hospital every morning and participate as an Intern in the Physical Therapy Department. I have gained a lot of experience that I would not have received otherwise. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be in this class and the Internship program, as it has helped me to explore my future career.
Emily Palmer - Montrose High School
The CTS Internship program is such an awesome opportunity for a second year student. Last year as a Junior from Montrose High School, I completed Mrs. Houk’s Health Occupations Program. I earned my Certification in Nursing Assistant (CNA). Now, as a senior, I have the opportunity to shadow Gillis Family Dentistry. This helps with my career decision, how to be professional, and it allows me to be involved in my career choice.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and sometimes Friday, I shadow from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. There are always a lot of different opportunities, such as, fillings, braces, crowns, etc. I also get to learn how to act in the dental environment. It has provided me the opportunity to meet and work with kind employees at the dental office. I am excited about my future career in Dentistry.
Adelyne Dowse - Ballard High School
In the Emergency Room (ER), it is often hectic. There is usually a lot going on, and most times it takes a strong stomach to be involved with the care provided. People come to the ER with anything from a broken ankle to a life threatening illness, so you learn to be very professional very quickly. It’s amazing how professional and mature the staff is in the Emergency Department.
As a student from Ballard, the medical field always seemed so out of reach for me. Mrs. Houk showed me that I can do anything I set my mind to if I am willing to work for it. With her help in learning the information needed and allowing me to do the internship with the Emergency Department, she has helped push me to follow my dreams in becoming a Sports Medicine Physician.
Kelsie Martinez - Clinton High School
I love this class. It is definitely the most interesting class I take. I believe this class will help me get my foot in the door at the healthcare facilities. Once graduated, I plan to attend Ozark Technical College to become a registered nurse with a long-term goal of becoming a pediatric nurse. I love being able to learn hands-on in addition to traditional classroom instruction.
INTERNSHIP
The 2017-2018 school year is the first time we have offered internship opportunities to students in all CTE programs. We currently have 12 students placed in a healthcare internship and are actively pursuing internship opportunities in the following career areas; Agriculture, Automotive, Building Trades, Business (including Accounting, Multimedia, Graphic Design), Computer Repair/Networking, Machining, Marketing, and Welding. If you know of a business that would be interested in participating in the Clinton Technical School internship program, contact Paula Jones or Lisa Kaiser at (660) 885-6101.
