Superintendent of the Day - Kellen Haigh
Sedro-Woolley High School Senior Kellen Haigh served as Superintendent of the Day Friday.
After graduation, Kellen plans on attending Arizona Christian where he will work on his undergraduate requirements for becoming a physical therapist. He received an athletic scholarship to play lacrosse at the school, although he now has a back-up plan as he was heavily recruited at every stop today. He was told he could become a bus driver, bus mechanic, EMT or firefighter as those jobs are in high demand!
As part of the tour, Kellen visited the district's transportation department where he learned his former bus driver, Tracy Gugel, is now the transportation director. He said he remembered her as being a very "steady driver," which was great! He was also able to look underneath the hood of a bus with our amazing mechanics.
Kellen then met with Sedro-Woolley Mayor Julia Johnson who gave him a tour of City Hall and explained the integral part the city staff play in serving the community. The dual roles and responsibilities that most of the city staff have is extensive and impressive.
Sedro-Woolley Police Lt. Sorsdal had Kellen try on the heavy SWAT gear (he was not impressed with the idea of wearing that during a long standoff in warm weather).
Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Gardner (who was Kellen's PE teacher at Big Lake Elementary School) showed Kellen the station's bay of emergency vehicles and other fascinating areas that are typically not seen by the public (including a really interesting vending machine set up that allows for easy inventory tracking of supplies).
Kellen then took a trip back to Big Lake Elementary School where he visited with Principal Matt Lutes (who was his third grade teacher back in the day) and Shauna Carpenter (whose son Owen is a fellow senior!). He was thrilled to see visit his kindergarten teacher Mary Lynch. One last stop in teacher Beth Vaith's classroom, before going back to the district office for a quick lunch with Superintendent Mickelson and a quick photo in the superintendent's chair where he was able to monitor the high school's security cameras for a few seconds before heading back to class at SWHS!
Advanced Treble Choir Auditions
Mr. Brask and Ms. Lenoue are holding student auditions to reform an Advanced Treble Choir at SWHS.
Advanced Treble Choir will be made up of soprano, mezzo, and alto singers motivated to develop their vocal and choral skills.
Advanced Treble Choir will represent our school in the community and at regional festivals and competitions. If interested in auditioning, email Mr. Brask at pbrask@swsd101.org.

Fentanyl Awareness Day β May 9th
When it comes down to it, we know thereβs nothing more important than the health and safety of your children. Thatβs why weβre so intent to share some crucial information with you about the fentanyl poisoning crisis that communities across the country are experiencing.
In 2021, 100K+ people died from drug overdoses driven by fentanyl, and the fastest-growing group is under 19.
National Fentanyl Awareness Day is May 9th. The day is designed to raise public awareness about a crisis that continues to worsen each day.
Fentanyl is:
- A potent prescription synthetic opioid drug approved by the FDA for pain relief and anesthetic.
- Fentanyl is 80-100 times stronger than morphine.
- A potentially lethal dose of fentanyl is the size of 2 grains of salt.
- According to the DEA, 6 out of 10 pills contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl.
Important things you need to know about fentanyl:
- You canβt smell or taste fentanyl, and you cannot tell if a pill is fake just by looking at it.
- Do not take any pill that you do not directly get from a doctor or pharmacist.
- Pills purchased online or from social media are not safe β no matter what someone tells you.
- If you or someone around you takes an illegal pill, know how to recognize an opioid overdose.
- Never use illegal pills when youβre alone.
Signs of an opioid overdose:
- Pinpoint pupils
- Slow, shallow, or no breathing
- Gurgling or snoring
- Difficult to wake or canβt wake
- Extreme drowsiness
- Cold, clammy skin
- Gray/blue skin, fingernails, or lips
Call 911 immediately if you think someone is overdosing.
Awareness is key, and we need to educate our kids right now. Preparation is important to having a successful conversation with your kids. To help you with this challenging conversation, weβd like to give you a link to the free Natural High Fentanyl Toolkit: www.naturalhigh.org/fentanyl.
Together, through better and more effective awareness campaigns like the National Fentanyl Awareness Day on May 9th, we can save lives.
Even if substance use is the last thing you need to worry about with your child, imagine, perhaps, that their awareness could help save a friend.
Child care funding assistance
Thanks to the generosity of the Skagit Community Foundation, funding is still available to help families living or working in Skagit County pay for child care through Opportunity Councilβs Emergency Child Care Voucher Program: www.ccanorthwest.org/assistance.
