CREATING A FATHER FRIENDLY EARLY CHILDHOOD SETTINGS
Programme summary
Today it is known that high and positive father involvement is required forchildren’s healthy development. Unfortunately, father involvement is one of the most problematic issue for earlychildhood programs. Inmost of the societies childcare is seen as “the work” of women. The reflection of this belief toearly childhood education is “female dominated environment”. However, it depends on the preschool staff to change this general situation and create a father friendly environment to increase father involvement in earlychildhood settings.
This program offers all earlychildhood educators to learn about the ways to change preschool environment to one in which fathers are welcome, their involvement is appreciated and father involvement shiftedto a “norm” ratherthanto be a suprisingissue.
Teachers are the key actors to increase father involvement. Their attitudes, beliefsandpractice has influencethelevel of fathers / father figures involvement into earlychildhood education program. This coursewill be helpful for teachers and administratives who wants to involve fathers in earlychildhood classrooms and schools.
During the course various working methods such as lecturing, working in pairs / groups, role play, discussions and examples from practices will be used to make early childhood educators fell competent to involve fathers into their educational programs.
Objectives
The seminar is designed to recognize and raise awareness about the meaning, development and the current definition of the term father involvement, the importance of father involvement, the ways and the roles of teachers and school staff to increase father involvement. All participants will be informed about how to create a father friendly environment in early childhood education programs.
Target groups
The seminar is designed for all the teachers and professional workers in schools who would like to learn different methods and approaches for better understanding, motivating, working with, treating and managing father-school relationship and father involvement.
Programme day-by-day
Day 1: MEETING WITH EACH OTHER
Thiswill be the introductory meeting. We will talk about the practical arrangement, timetable of the programme and the course venue.
Day 2 andDay 3: MEANING OF FATHER INVOLVEMENT
Without understanding what father involvement is and how it has reached the meaning that we have today, it is difficult to increase father involvement. Therefore, first two days of the program is devoted to the discussions abou the history and meaning of father involvement. Therefore, at Day 2 and 3 we will talk about;
- History of fatherhood
- Meaning of Fatherinvolvement

Day 4 and 5: UNDERSTANDING FATHER INVOLVEMENT
In order to increase father involvement, one should believe in the importance of the father involvement and the factors that influnce its level. Therefore, in these two days we will talk about the results of scientific studies that indicate how father involvement create a difference in the children’s live sandwhich factors influnce father’s involvement level into their children’s lives in general and their education in particular. Therefore at Day 4 and 5 wewill talk about,
- Consequences of positive father involvement
- Consequences of low father involvement
- Factors influence fathers’ involvement level in their children’s lives
- Factors influence fathers’ involvement in their children’s education
Day 6: HOW TO CREATE FATHER FRIENDLY ECE SETTINGS
It is impossible to involve fathers into earlychildhood programs without creating a “father friendly environment”. In this session we will talk about how, as teachers and administratives, we can create father friendly earlychildhood environment. We will discuss some successful practices around the world and their applicability in our own schools.
Day 7: CLOSING SESSION
This will be the closing session. In this session we will plan follow up activities. We will discuss the course outcomes, and future possibilities for future cooperation among participants.

Which competencies will you acquire in this course?
“Creating father friendly earlychildhood settings” course informs participants how to increase father involvement in earlychildhood education programs. Some of the acquired competencies in the course are:
- Understanding the meaning of father involvement
- Getting familiar with the term father involvement and identified different roles of fathers in their children’s lives,
- Analyzingfactorsinfluencingfathers’ involvement,
- Understanding the importance of father involvement,
- Understandingthe role of earlychildhood teachers and school staff to increase father involvement,
- Empowering teachers and administratives to work with fathers in a father friendly environment.
Financial conditions - Fee
- The course fee – 600 € for a 7 days course. Amount includes preparation for the course, tuition, training materials, administration costs, organizational costs, half-day excursion and VAT. (Without travel)
- We can provide you very nice and comfortable hotels. All expenses is covered by EU in Erasmus+ School and Erasmus+ Adult project.

Trainer: Dr. Şenil ÜNLÜ ÇETİN
Dr. Şenil ÜNLÜ ÇETİN graduated from Middle East Technical University. She completed her Bechelor Degree, Master of Science and Doctoral degree at METU Early Childhood Education Program. She completed her M.S. and PhD thesis on father involvement in early years. Between 2007 and 2014 she worked as a research asistant at METU and now, she has been working at Başkent University at the department of Earlychildhood Education Since 2014. She provides courses such as, Introduction to ECE, Children and Play, Parent Involvement, Music in ECE, Creative Drama in Education.
