The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks
Six strangers held prisoner by a mysterious kidnapper – is it a thriller or just another locked-room mystery, asks Simon Mason
Red Queen by Victoria, Aveyard
This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.
The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.
That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.
Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.
But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.
The Boy with the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds
Matt’s first day of his senior year of high school is on the nineteenth day of school. But he has no energy to feel glad to have missed the first three weeks of school, or to feel happy that this is his last year of school. Everything is different this year. People who are supposed to be Matt’s friends can’t even look him in the eyes.
His mom died over the summer, and suddenly, everything just feels backwards for him.
Luckily, Matt doesn’t have to endure full days of school. He did well throughout high school, so his classes end at noon. His plan had been to work at the bank for the work-study program, but after missing the first 3 weeks, he lost his job to another student.
Matt has no choice but to find work somewhere else; his dad, a frequent whiskey consumer, can’t handle the bills on his own. And Matt is lonely enough; he can’t spend his afternoons sitting around doing nothing. He finds a job at the local funeral home, though he feels hesitant to work somewhere that will constantly remind him of his mom’s death; it’s either the funeral home or a nasty job at the Cluck Bucket that comes with the likelihood of cleaning up vomit.
Now Matt finds himself wearing a black suit everyday for his job. He makes pretty good money, so it’s all right, but everything else in his life still sucks, and he can’t handle one more piece of bad news.
Then he meets Lovely, a girl who never cries—even though she’s been through far more than Matt can understand. She catches his attention, and he begins wondering…Why can’t he be as tough as Lovely? Might she understand his loneliness? Could she help take the loneliness away?
