Il est ou c'est?

Which one should I use?

When should I use il/elle est? Ils/elles sont?

  • Remember that il/elle and ils/elles are PRONOUNS. The function of a pronoun in a sentence is to replace a noun in order to avoid repetition.
  • So, il/elle est and ils/elles sont are used when referring to a specific thing or things.

Example:

Comment tu trouves cette robe?

Elle est très chouette, non? (What is great? Elle! What is elle? Cette robe! Since

are referring to a specific thing, the pronoun elle is used.)

When should I use c'est?

  • C'est is used when referring to something in general. It can replace a string of words that represents and idea.

Example:

J'aime porter un pantalon parce que c'est pratique. (What is pratical? Wearing

pants! Since we are referring to a string of words representing an idea, we cannot

use a pronoun, we must use c'est).

Example:

J'ai réussi à mon examen de maths! C'est super! (What is super? Passing a math

test! Since we are referring to a string of words representing a general idea, we

must use c'est).

Now see if you can do it on your own:

1. Oh, je n'aime plus ce cardigan.

- Oui, __________ un peu large.

2. Comment tu trouves mes bottes en cuir?

- ____________ cool!

3. Tu aimes porter un jean à l'école?

- Oui, ___________ très confortable, un jean.
