Bye Bye FEBRUARY-Let's have a MARDI GRAS Celebration!
I just have to say that you all are amazing, strong, wonderful, and consistently blow me away with your positive attitudes and effort. Every year, life happens to us in such a way that we have to pause and question our priorities. This year alone, many staff members have lost loved ones, are caring for sick and aging parents, crying over the antics of teen and young adult children and struggling with personal health issues. I mean sometimes you want to stop and say, "REALLY???? ENOUGH ALREADY!" But, you all keep on ticking. I am inspired daily on how you support each other in times of need. Right now, in my mind, I can mentally cruise down the halls and peer in to the rooms of each of you and think of some kind of personal stress, strife, or hardship, you may be dealing with at this time. But yet, you keep on smiling!
So, to show you all how much I appreciate all you are doing, we are going to MARDI GRAS in New ORLEANS! Start packing!!!!!
Um...no, sorry, we can't do that. But what we can do, is have a Mardi Gras pancake breakfast on Tuesday. Stacy and I will be flipping jacks to fill your tummies and get you started on a happy note Tuesday morning. With the support of the office staff, whom I cannot live without, we will be serving pancakes, bacon and sausage, fruit, and coffee. So come early and enjoy! We should have the first round ready to go by 7:30. Oh, it's also a jeans spirit day for teachers. Wear some bright colors and mentally export yourself to the fun, fanfare, and mostly debauchery of New Orleans Mardi Gras!
As we motivate through our days and the inevitable events that make up our personal lives, some exciting and some devastating, we are reminded of the purpose we serve in an elementary school. It's the little things that truly count in life that keep us going. I mean, who ever heard of their HEAD CUSTODIAN and CAFETERIA MANAGERS putting on an event like a Hot Chocolate Bar, fun music, and prize giveaways???? That was fabulous and ALL DONE by Robin and Debbie. What a happy way to start a Monday! As Dr. Seuss says, 'THIS IS FUN and FUN IS GOOD.' I hear they have even more surprises up their sleeve for a day in March!
March morale is always a struggle, so if you have ideas to boost the staff that Stacy and I can help with, we are game. We have a work hard/play hard mindset around here, so I am open to more suggestions.
JBD STAFF ROCKS AND IS THE BEST. Just sayin'.
:) Beth

EARLY NOTIFICATION OF RESIGNMENT/RETIREMENT FROM HR DEPT.
If for any reason you are not planning to return for the 2017-2018 school year, please notify the Department of Human Resources as early as possible. You may do this by completing the Request for Resignation of Employment form, which can be found on the Intranet under Forms, Department of Human Resources. Delays in notification have a negative impact on our ability to meet staffing needs for our students and schools.
If you plan to retire, a Request for Resignation form must be submitted to the Department of Human Resources, and VRS retirement forms must be submitted to the Office of Consolidated Benefits. Click here for additional information regarding retirement and all of the necessary forms. If you would like more information about retirement, please contact (According to the first letter of your last name) A – K: Sherry Phelps 757-263-6911 or email Sherry.phelps@vbschools.com; L-Z: Sharon Clayton 757-263-6923 or email Sharon.clayton@vbschools.com.
NEW THIS YEAR – Due to the national teacher shortage, all K-12 teachers (including ESL, guidance department chair, instructional specialist, instructional technology specialist, LMS, math specialist, reading specialist, SIS, school counselor, SLP, professional learning specialist, testing assessment specialist and Title I or II resource) or administrators who submit a resignation form to the Department of Human Resources on or before March 31, 2017, may earn an early notification incentive of $500 as long as funds are available. In order to be eligible, you must be a regularly contracted (not on an annual contract or temporary employment agreement) employee in one of the positions listed above, be in good standing, and you must complete your 2016-2017 school year contract. Promotions to administrative positions generally cause a domino effect through the promotion of classroom teachers; therefore, administrators are included.
DIRECTIONS FOR APPLYING FOR THE INCENTIVE. The completed Request for Resignation of Employment form must be delivered in person no later than March 31, 2017, to the Department of Human Resources, located in the School Administration Building at 2512 George Mason Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23456 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please make sure your principal or department head has signed the form before you bring it in.
Approval will be given on a first-come-first-served basis. Eligible employees will be informed of approval or disapproval of the incentive via email by April 30, 2017. If approved, you will receive the incentive in your last VBCPS paycheck.
