Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson
Chloe and the other students in this rural school ignore "Never New Maya" because of her poverty.
Three Writing Ideas:
1. Readers can identify someone who was kind to them. They can design and write a thank-you note, telling that person how much their kindness meant. Discuss how it felt to write the note, and how they think the receiver might feel when receiving it.
2. Share one of the illustrations showing Maya isolated from the rest of the children. Readers can write adjectives to describe this picture. Discuss why the identified words are approriate for the scene.
3. This story is told from Chloe's point of view, and Chloe is the unkind girl, the bully. Readers can write this same story from Maya's viewpoint - how does the child feel who is ostracized by the others? Readers can share how it feels to not be a part of the "group"
