~ GRANT SCHOOL IS ONE OF 9 SCHOOLS TO WIN ENERGY STAR CERTIFICATION! ~ ~ ¡GRANT SCHOOL ES UNA DE LAS 9 ESCUELAS QUE COMPITE PARA GANAR LA CERTIFICACIÓN ENERGY STAR! ~
The following schools have been certified: John Adams Middle School, Lincoln Middle School, Franklin Elementary School, Grant Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School, Muir Elementary School, Rogers Learning Community and Roosevelt Elementary School in Santa Monica, and Webster Elementary School in Malibu.
“We are proud of the efforts of staff at all of our schools and offices regarding energy reduction and efficiency,” Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati said. “We congratulate our nine sites that achieved this important certification. Our school board and site leadership are committed to continuing improvement.”
Energy Star-certified buildings are verified to perform in the top 25 percent of buildings nationwide, based on an energy use analysis that takes into account occupancy, hours of operation and other key factors.
The EPA says that on average, Energy Star-certified buildings use 35 percent less energy, produce 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and are less expensive to operate than similar buildings.
Earlier this year, the Board of Education adopted the Districtwide Plan for Sustainability, which states goals for the next 20 years and charts a path to meet them.
Part of that path includes installing solar panels at school sites to reduce energy use from the public grid. Currently, nine of 16 school sites have at least some solar production. To see solar production and energy use across all district sites, people can check out the district’s energy use dashboard, launched in 2018.
For more information, contact Sustainability Coordinator Caroline Coster at ccoster@smmusd.org. For more information on the Energy Star program, visit www.energystar.gov/buildings.

Message from Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati:
Tragic School Shooting in Santa Clarita
Dear SMMUSD parents, guardians, and staff,
Our hearts and thoughts are with the students, staff and families of Saugus High School and the William S. Hart Union High School District following this morning’s shooting. We extend our sympathies to all of those affected by this tragedy.
We are unsettled and impacted when we hear of any school shooting, however, this one is particularly difficult as it is closer to home for us. We have staff who reside in the Santa Clarita Valley. Our students compete and perform alongside students from the Hart District in music, band, athletics, drama and academics. We have friends and relatives who live in this safe and close-knit community.
It makes us sad that once again students have been victimized by an act of violence in a place where everyone should feel safe.
We have received some calls from parents regarding our safety protocols. SMMUSD has a strategic security plan for preventing and mitigating active shooter events and other targeted violence. This plan is reviewed and updated regularly. The plan outlines prevention, protection and response components. Providing a safe learning environment is an essential goal of the Board of Education and staff. Our school sites practice drills as part of each school safety plan. If you would like to know about the specific plan for your school site, please contact your school office to make an appointment to review the plan.
Our local law enforcement agencies are providing additional patrols around our schools. We are fortunate to have many community partners supporting our safety and security efforts. If you hear or see something, including on social media, say something. Speak with your children to do the same. You can report directly to www.WeTip.com or call 800-782-7463.
We understand parent concerns whenever a tragedy like this occurs and we want to assure you that the safety and health of students and staff are our top priorities.
If your student is experiencing anxiety at school over this incident, please reach out to your school administrator or counselor. Here are two resources for schools and families on this topic that you may find helpful:

Mensaje delSuperintendenteDr. Ben Drati:
TrágicoTiroteo Escolar en Santa Clarita
Estimados padres, guardianes y empleados deSMMUSD,

~FRESHLY COOKED FROM OUR DISTRICT'S CHEF ~
Our District is making strides in providing healthy meals to our schools and one major step is increasing the number of items that are made fresh each week. In November we have a number of items that are made fresh by our district chefs.
Nov 20 - Baked Macaroni Au Gratin with Steamed Broccoli
This delicious meal was a huge hit last month, so SaMoHi is cooking it up again for our schools. The broccoli will be steamed at your school. The alternate option of grilled cheese will also be freshly made.
Nov 21 - Shepard's Pie
Get your veggies and meat all together! The traditional layered dish topped with mashed potatoes, has freshly cooked carrots, onion, peas, celery and beef hiding below.
Nov 26 - Oven Baked Chicken
The signature staple of the freshly made dishes is SaMoHi's oven-baked chicken. Seasoned to perfection, it's always a crowd-pleaser!
