Thesis Statement

In the novel, A Raisin in The Sun, Lorraine Hansberry shows the theme which is the importance of family. Mama's plant symbolizes her families dreams and expressions.

Theme Analysis

The importance of family in the text is where mama said that the plant represents her because the plant has been through a lot and its still continues to keep moving and growing. Honey, big Walter would come in here some nights back the and slump down on that couch there and just look at the rug, and look at me and look at the rug and then back at me--- and I'd know he was down then.. really down. (45)


Woman vs Nature B/C Mama use the plant to Symbolism lies her dreams and her family and the plant went thought hard times like mama did. Also the plant shows how Mama waited a grand. Conclusion that Mama always had dream that she never gave up on and the plant reminder her that she could always reach these dreams one day.

Characterization & Quest for the American Dream

Mama: she is the head of her family and is always looking out for them. "what you ain't never understood is that i ain't got nothing, don't own nothing ain't never really wanted nothing that wasn't for you." (106)

Walter: he is the son of Mama and he tries to find the easy way out of being poor. "Never mind how i feel-you got any more to say 'bout how people ought to sit down and talk to each other? ... Get out of my house, man." (119)

Ruth: she is Walters husband and she is a hard worker and looks out for her family. "Honey-look in that package there and see what i found on sale this morning at the South Center" (110)


Mama Plant

meaning mama dreams about her family. Textual Mama appears in the play for the first time in Act I, scene i. The notes state that she "goes to the window, opens it, and brings in a feeble little plant growing doggedly in a small pot on the windowsill. She feels the dirt and puts it back out" (39). Visual plant in A Raisin in the Sun represents Mama's dream of someday having her own house, with her own little garden in the back. The dream has been a long time coming. At times she's been close to giving up hope, but the fact that she keeps nurturing the plant which means so much. This shows how she never gives up - on her dream, herself, or her children.

Insurance check

big Walter work hard to earn the insurance money for his family.

textual The insurance check is all Walter needs to pursue the venture. He promises to bring the money to Willy when he receives it. Meanwhile, Beneatha is spraying the apartment with insecticide in an attempt to rid it of cockroaches. Beneatha and Travis start fighting and Beneatha threatens him with the spray gun. (Act I, scene ii) visual is mama and Beneatha and Travis were looking at the check.

Younger's Apartment

meaning It signifies their "hope" of achieving the American Dream. It is the opportunity that they are so desperately grasping for. This goes hand-in-glove with Mama's plant. Mama says her plant doesn't ever get enough light or water. This is her "family" not getting enough opportunity to thrive. They need a "break". They need a "window of opportunity", and they get it with the insurance money. It's a small window, because Walter has to "man-up" before he can lead his family the right way. Mama always wants her plant/family to have enough light and water, so they can "grow" together. Ruth will eventually fill Mama's shoes, and she knows that having more "light"/opportunity, will be essential if the family is going to grow in a positive direction. textual The Younger living room would be a comfortable and well-ordered romm if it were not for a number of indestructible contradicitions to this state of being. in conclusion In the novel, A Raisin in The Sun by, Lorraine Hansberry shows the theme of importance of family which expresses their dreams and is symbolized by Mama's plant. Next, mama did whatever she had to do to provide for her family. The plant was there going through tuff times with mama. The plant gave Mama life and hope to keep casing her dreams. The apartment shows all the struggles that the family went through including the financial struggles.
