Principal's Weekly Bulletin

Ross Elementary School: November 15

Big picture

Message from Principal Searl

During this season of Thanksgiving, I remain grateful to our community for their resilience and continued patience in challenging times.

DCPS continues to explore ways to bring additional students back into elementary schools for Term 2 using the CAREs model. Please take this quick survey to indicate your interest in the CAREs model. Information about planning for Term 3 is forthcoming.

You should have received an email from DCPS about accessing the new Aspen Parent Portal.

This is how you will view your child's K-5 report card. If you have questions, please reach out to Mr. Salazar. He is the Ross POC for the portal.

Continue to stay well and stay well informed:

Playground Use During ReOpening

Beginning Monday, November 16, 2020, DC Public Schools will implement an adjusted playground use policy for our elementary school playgrounds. Since 2016, it has been DCPS’ policy that school playgrounds are closed to the community during school hours. The only modification we are making to this policy is that the playground will not be available for use before the school day begins, as well. This change will allow us to continue to keep our students attending CARE and In-Person Learning classrooms safe and healthy during the school day. I understand this may be disappointing news to our families.

Members of the public will still be able to enjoy school playgrounds between the hours listed below.

· Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. until dusk, but no later than 8:00 p.m. (On Wednesdays, the playground will be open starting at 12:30pm)

· Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. until dusk, but no later than 8:00pm.

In the meantime, you can also find a list of Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) parks and playgrounds that will be open during the school day for public use at this link.

Attic Renovation and Arts Update

The structural work has been completed in the attic along with the installation of level flooring and contractors are moving into a new phase of the work. The DCPS Inner Core team has confirmed that all schools undergoing arts space renovations will receive program start-up funding. The Ross Arts Planning Committee, formed last Spring, will meet after the Thanksgiving Break to discuss future programming, community partnerships and budget. Teacher Lisa Juriga and Parent Patricia Villamil co-chair this committee. In the meantime, DCPS Music has a brief survey regarding interest and experience in instrumental music.
