Writing
Each child should have a speech at this point! I gave everyone two copies: one for home and one for school, so hopefully you have seen it. The majority of the kids are done or very close to being done with their second chapter, which is a persuasive essay about why their Famous Hoosier is important. We will spend the last part of the week researching the time period during which their Famous Hoosier lived to learn more about what life was like for them!
Language Arts
Wordly Wise: Wordly Wise 15 A & B will be due Thursday. The unit 15 test will be on 5/12.
Words Their Way: WTW Quiz Friday.
Reading
No reading this week due to NWEA testing and preparing for Famous Hoosiers
Math
We will be continuing unit 7 in math this week. Topics covered will include multiplying fractions by whole numbers, multiplying mixed numbers by whole numbers, and division number stories.
Science
We will finishing up our catapult project today, as well as completing the review for unit 5. I have moved the test back a day to Thursday due to the catapult project taking a bit longer than I had planned! Students should be able to answer the following short answer questions for their test:
1) If a magnetic force causes a train to move slightly above the rails instead of sliding on them, what force is reduced and how does it affect the train's motion? (The train will be able to travel faster because friction is reduced)
Describe how drag affects a fast moving train. (Drag pushes against the train and slows it down)
2) Based on a chart with three sled designs traveling at three different speeds, identify which company has built the fastest sled.
3) Students are designing a bumper car. Describe a way students could make sure their car is not damaged by hitting other cars. (surround the car with a material, such as rubber, that will absorb the impact)
Explain how students can reduce friction that might slow down their car. (there are many correct answers, but some examples would be to put oil on the wheels or making sure the wheels are very smooth)
Famous Hoosiers
May 9: This is the dress rehearsal. Students should come to school with their full costume and speech memorized. They will be presenting their speech to the class throughout the day. They will be given time to change before their speech. I will be grading speeches this day.
May 10: This is the Wax Museum day. Students will be given time to change after lunch. The Wax Museum will open to SGE students at 2:00 and parents at 2:30. Students should go home in the way indicated on their transportation form, which is due May 5.
Indiana State Museum
We could also use some chaperones for this field trip. I currently have 4 paid chaperones at the $5.50 rate. Any additional chaperones are welcome to attend, but will need to pay the full admission of $16.75. If you would like to chaperone, you should be willing to:
-Ride the bus to and from the museum.
-Supervise a small group of students throughout the museum.
-Refrain from purchasing food from the concession stand or visiting the gift shop.
T-Shirts and Graduation
Graduation Caps
-Puff Paint
-Sharpies (don't work as well as puff paint, but do the job)
-Glitter glue (no loose glitter, please)
-Anything that can be attached with craft glue - sequins, rhinestones, foam shapes, ribbon, etc.
End of Year Survey
As we begin the process to plan for next year, we would like your feedback on how this school year went for your family and input for next year. The first five fields are required but the last seven fields are optional. We thank you in advance for giving us your honest, yet professional feedback. The survey will be open until the end of business day on Friday, June 2nd, 2017. For those of you with multiple children at SGE, it is set up to all for multiple responses. Please click here to access the survey. Thank you!
