Principal’s Message - April 9, 2021
As we are just finishing up with March Is Reading Month, I’d like to suggest the following to support reading skills.
When teaching reading and writing today, we teach our students to "pinch" sounds when we SPELL and use "one breath blending" or read words in slow motion when blending to READ.
Your child has been learning and practicing these two techniques during word study. Encourage your child to use and practice these strategies at home.
Also, please read the article from the “Reading Connection” that focuses on phonics to assist with our younger students.
“Wordplay”…
Use these activities to build your child’s phonemic awareness – their ability to hear sounds in words:
Choose a three-letter word, such as cap. Have your child substitute different beginning sounds from the alphabet to make new words (lap, map, nap, rap, sap, tap, zap). See how many words they can create.
Pick a long word and tell them to clap once as they say each syllable. For mozzarella, they would clap four times: moz-za-rel-la.
Ask your child to say a word without the first sound. Example: “Can you say sit without the s?” (Answer: it)
Think of a word and give your youngster a “sound” clue to figure it out. For instance, “I’m thinking of a word for something that you chew. The word has an “uh” sound in the middle.” (Answer: gum)

Counselor Corner
Flowers are blooming and it is giving us all the summer feels! The sunshine has such a powerful effect on our spirit and energy. I hope you are finding time as a family to enjoy it all! This month in counseling we will focus on problem solving. This could look like reading through scenarios and talking about possible avenues or solutions to problems as well as practicing the use of sentence starters that give students a framework to pull from when communicating with others. When we use effective problem solving, we acknowledge alternative perspectives, respect one another’s emotions, and overall have more successful relationships.
Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school. More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home! Reminder that students should not be playing on the playground before school starts. We have no adult supervision before school on the playground so it is not safe.
