GETTING INTO THE GROOVE!
Greetings, Bigelow families & students! By this point, we are all finding our "school year groove"; re-learning school procedures, remembering new friends/classmates & teachers' names, and getting into our normal school routine. I also want to commend each of you for adjusting so smoothly to our new school start time of 7:55 am; students are arriving at an earlier time and ready to learn.
From September 15-October 15, Bigelow will recognize & celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month! We look forward to uplifting our Hispanic students, families, and staff this month by displaying Latin American flags throughout our school, as well as having Hispanic students share a fact about their culture each week on our morning announcements.
Also, September is National Deaf Awareness Month! And, in case you didn't know—Bigelow is home to the CAPS Collaborative Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program! We are excited to have such amazing, diverse, and talented students and staff as members of the Bigelow community. Bigelow has increasingly worked to include deaf/hard of hearing information and resources into our school community, so that we all can become more aware and knowledgeable of American Sign Language and how to best connect with our deaf students & staff.
This weekend, Rosh Hashanah began Friday at sundown and will continue through nightfall on Sunday. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated with candle lighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, and prayer services. Bigelow sends a sincere "Shanah Tovah!" to all of our community members who celebrate Rosh Hashanah.
Next week, we will begin implementing Sown to Grow with students in Advisory. Sown to Grow is an evidence-based program that promotes easy and engaging student check-ins, personalized feedback, and built-in curriculum that empowers schools to improve student social, emotional, and academic well-being. Click here to learn more about Sown to Grow and its benefits toward students' social-emotional wellness.
Lastly—this year, Bigelow is receiving funding through Title 1 for the academic year to provide additional supports in literacy and math to our students. Aligned with best teaching practices, students are often grouped flexibly and receive both whole-group and targeted small-group instruction. These groups are fluid and may be facilitated by a classroom teacher, teaching assistant, Title 1 educator, or curriculum coach. This collaborative approach to student learning and growth is one of the many things that makes the Bigelow community special.
The grant funding comes with several regulations that the school/district needs to follow. The distribution of the attached forms is one of them.
The School-Family Compact outlines the partnership between home and school to support student learning
The Families Right to Know explains the option to request information regarding the professional qualifications of student’s classroom teachers.
Please share any questions or feedback related to these forms with Jennifer Shore, Director of Special Initiatives and Programs; firstname.lastname@example.org.
I hope everyone remained safe as we experienced effects of Hurricane Lee this weekend. There is plenty of information included within this week's newsletter for your family to digest. Feel free to contact me, any other member of Bigelow Leadership, or the Executive Admin. Asst., Kersten Raso, with questions, comments, or concerns. Thank you, and have a great week!
