Big picture

Happy Thanksgiving

The Grosse Pointe Public School System wishes you a safe and happy Thanksgiving. There will be no school for students Wednesday through Friday, with classes resuming Monday, November 29th. We hope this provides an opportunity to rest and recharge with family and friends.

If you're looking for a fun family activity, as part of our 100th anniversary celebration, GPPSS is participating in the Grosse Pointe Chamber Parade at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 26 (the day after Thanksgiving). Families are welcome to participate. Please join us at the staging area before 9:30 a.m. The parade route goes along Kercheval to The Village.

Our group will be in SECTION: B NUMBER: 29 Check-in begins at 9:00 a.m. All participants in our group need to be in line by 9:30 a.m. The official start time is 10 a.m. The staging area for our group takes place near the corner of Lewiston and Grosse Pointe Blvd. Parking is available in St. Paul Catholic School’s parking lot. Please enter the lot off Lake Shore Road. Grosse Pointe Blvd. will be closed due to the staging of the parade.

Students are encouraged to wear their school colors and show off their GPPSS pride. Thank you for celebrating 100 years of academic excellence with us!

Board Update from November 22 Regular Meeting

At the top of the meeting, President Herd made a motion to amend the agenda, removing item VI. B. Board Policy 1500 COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing for District Employees as both OSHA and MiOSHA paused the mandate until a decision is made by the courts. Please note there was misinformation in the community about this - the policy was only to comply with a mandate for businesses with 100 employees. There was no part of this that dealt with student vaccines or testing.

After the amended agenda passed 6-0, the board also passed a resolution to honor the 2021 Distinguished Employees (please see above). The minutes, human resources report and annual audit passed 7-0. Approval of Clark Hill (instead of NEOLA) for Board policies and administrative guidelines, and the Early Childhood Plan both passed 5-2, with Ahmed Ismail and Lisa Papas voting against both. There was a great deal of discussion about the ECC plan, including clarifying language proposed by Papas that was approved by a 4-3 vote before the plan passed 5-2. Ongoing dialogue with Grosse Pointe Park will continue regarding the Trombly property, just as dialogue continues with Harper Woods regarding the Poupard property.

Agenda action items for December 13 currently only include the minutes from November 22. Under Information and Discussion, the monthly financial statement, check register and healthcare report were routine in nature.

Future meetings include:

  • BOE Policy Committee Meeting, Thursday, December 2, 4 p.m., Board Room, North High School
  • BOE Facilities Committee Meeting, Thursday, December 2, 6 p.m., Board Room, North High School

COVID Vaccine/Booster Clinics

Wayne County Health Department offers boosters and age 12+ doses 12/4/21

The Grosse Pointe Public School System, in partnership with the Wayne County Health Department, is hosting a voluntary vaccination/booster clinic for our staff and families Saturday, December 4, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Pierce Middle School. At this time the vaccine doses are for ages 12+.

Boosters of all 3 vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna and J&J) will be available to those 18+. Please bring your vaccination card if you are receiving a booster. Please reach out to info@gpschools.org with any questions.

Save the date for Pediatric Vaccine Clinic for ages 5-11 on 12/11/21

GPPSS is once again opening its doors for the Wayne County Health Department to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to our community. GPPSS will host two Pfizer Pediatric COVID vaccination clinics for 5-11 year-olds on the following Saturdays:

  • December 11: 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Kerby Elementary, 285 Kerby Road, GPF
  • January 8: 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Ferry Elementary, 748 Roslyn, GPW

Further details including an interest survey and registration form will be out the week of 11/29.

How to upload student vaccine records

Parents and guardians can upload their student's COVID vaccine card using the MiStar Parent Portal by following the directions linked here. According to quarantine guidelines from the Wayne County Health Department, any student who is fully vaccinated will not be required to quarantine if they are identified as a close contact to a COVID positive individual. Uploading your student’s vaccine card will help the district quickly identify those students who will not be required to quarantine. Thank you!

Last day to take the Fall Sports Survey is 11/23

Each season we ask parents and student athletes to provide input on their most recent sports experience - in this case fall 2021. The survey only takes a few minutes to complete, but provides valuable information to continuously improve our programs and services. There are two versions - one for parents and one for student athletes. The fall sports surveys will close at 4 p.m., Tuesday 11/23. Thank you for your feedback!

GPPSS staff Email formula - it's happening

All GPPSS staff use the same formula for email. Beginning the week of 11/29, the Technology department will be sunsetting all former email addresses and will only be keeping the current email protocol of first6lettersoflastnamefirstinital@gpschools.org (eg. doej@gpschools.org) as the only email address formula for staff.
