Finding Balance
Balance is not something that you find or stumble upon but rather something you create. This upcoming week, I will be creating balance in my personal and professional life.
A while back, my wife approached me about taking a vacation during our Spring Break. At first, I wasn't thrilled about this because vacations are often expensive, stressful (especially when traveling with little ones), and cause us to plan, pack, and make sacrifices in other areas to save money. We decided as a family that we should travel over break as we want to create memories for our children and get away from the hustle of our everyday lives. So beginning Saturday morning, at 4:30am (yes, I wrote AM) we will head to warmer temperatures and I will be unplugging from my principalship, paying bills, investing in retirement accounts, and engaging in technology. I will intentionally leave my watch, cell phone, and clean eating habits in Sterling Heights, Michigan. I will partake in the greasy hamburger over the salad, in leisure activities over exercise, and full-time parenting over perusing Twitter. I plan on eating when I am hungry and sleeping when I am tired. When my son Mason says, "Daddy will you play Superheroes with me?" My only response will be, "Am I Batman, Superman, or Ironman?"
So, I plan on coming back refreshed, rejuvenated, with less money in the savings account, and slightly heavier...but, I need BALANCE!

#FinishStrong
When we return from break, we will be in the homestretch of the school year, the weather should be breaking, and it is often a time of many distractions. As a parent, I would ask that you spend a few moments talking to your student about the importance of finishing strong and ending the school year on a high note.
Here are some ideas for talking points:
As eighth graders, when they return from Spring Break, they will be weeks away from high school. Their maturity level should begin to reflect a high school student and no longer a middle school student. They are looked up to by many of our younger students, set a positive example with how to say "goodbye" to middle school.
Seventh graders are moments away from being our leaders in our school and should begin to develop the mentality that they will set the tone for the student culture in our building. Lead by example and set a positive tone. Our incoming sixth graders will look up to you.
Sixth graders will no longer be the lost, confused, or the youngest students roaming our hallways. They will be approached by our incoming students and should welcome them with open arms and a helpful hand. They've had a successful first year in middle school and should be praised for their efforts. Encourage them to finish strong as things next year move at a faster pace with more challenging curriculum.
