OCTOBER IB Trait of the Month
OCTOBER SEL BOOK OF THE MONTH: MILO IMAGINES THE WORLD
MILO IMAGINES THE WORLD by Matt de la Pena
IB Trait: THINKER
SEL Competency: SOCIAL AWARENESS
Milo is on a long subway ride with his older sister. To
pass the time, he studies the faces around him and
makes pictures of their lives. There's the whiskered
man with the crossword puzzle; Milo imagines him
playing solitaire in a cluttered apartment full of
pets. There's the wedding-dressed woman with a
little dog peeking out of her handbag; Milo
imagines her in a grand cathedral ceremony. And
then there's the boy in the suit with the bright white
sneakers; Milo imagines him arriving home to a
castle with a drawbridge and a butler. But when
the boy in the suit gets off on the same stop as
Milo--walking the same path, going to the exact
same place--Milo realizes that you can't really
know anyone just by looking at them.
PAPER: ONLINE TUTORIAL FOR STUDENTS
Paper is our resource for 24/7 tutoring and homework support for all students in APS. Our Paper contact is Jaime Grant. You may have already received communication from her - especially our high school library media specialists.
Be sure to reach out to her to offer training to your staff, students and parents. She is eager to ensure that all know of this resource and can use it as necessary - with high schools being a high priority.
Sylvan Hills Middle School invited her to one of their staff meetings and the teachers are thrilled with this resource. The students are even able to log on to Paper during the school day for immediate support (think 3 before me).
Additionally, Paper is available for immediate download as a Chrome Extension for all devices. To download this as an extension, follow the steps here.
Paper is a resource curated by our Library Media Services Department so no one will know about it unless YOU share the information with others. This is a department initiative and we need YOU to get the word out with your teachers and students.

Paper Challenge
Paper Challenge
In an effort to help students utilize the valuable resources that Paper has to offer, we are hosting a fall themed nationwide contest, “Be-leaf In Yourself with Paper Challenge”, running October 3rd - October 28th! The top schools will be awarded a Paper prize package for students!
BEANSTACK: Log those minutes every day!!
RACE2 READ is the reading initiative and Beanstack is the computer program for logging in the minutes read. Atlanta Public Schools is raising the bar for reading via APS Race2Read: The 2 Million Minutes Challenge. This district-wide campaign encourages students, teachers, staff, parents and the entire Atlanta community to collectively read 2 million minutes. Beanstack is a web-based, mobile-friendly tool that we are using to track our independent reading during our 2 million minutes challenge. Reading may be logged at any time – in school or on the go.
APS is passing the baton, challenging you and your child to read every day. Each APS school has its own Beanstack site, where you can view individual school progress on achieving its schoolwide goal. Parents, find your child’s school site below or login via their Clever dashboard.https://apscascade.beanstack.org/reader365
