Ross / Ellis Weekly Newsletter

"Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday."
What Will We Be Learning This Week?
The Leader in Me
This week we will be focusing on Habit 4: Think Win-Win. We will be learning that by working together, students can achieve more than if they were on their own. Thinking Win-Win is beyond compromising. Students who put their brains together often can come up with a better solution to a problem than either one of them had envisioned.
Math
Next week in math we will solve word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will discuss factor pairs and prime and composite numbers.
Science
We will continue our study of natural disasters and how they shape our Earth. Students will read a Science Studies Weekly and research a chosen natural disaster in a small group. We will discuss the concepts of fact and opinion and report facts on a visual display.
Language Arts
We will also be starting our leveled Words Their Way sorts. Each group will have a different list, but the homework assignments and procedures remains the same as they were last week and there will be a test on Friday.
Social Studies
Relief Map Project:
The due date for our relief map project is coming up soon, on October 9. Here is the info that I sent home on this project a few weeks back for your reference. Please see me if you have any questions:
In addition to our usual classwork, students will be given the opportunity to complete an enrichment project at home for extra credit by creating a relief map of North Carolina that shows its three regions and major landforms. Students who wish to complete this project will need to turn it in by Friday, October 9. Students who complete this project will be given a 5 point bump in their social studies grade for the first quarter, up to 100% for the overall grade for the quarter. Students who choose not to do this project will not be penalized in any way as it is an extra credit project for students who would like further enrichment in social studies.

Grandparents Day
Calling all Grandparents! We all know how important grandparents are in the lives of our students and our 4th graders would love to have them visit for lunch next week! The scheduled days for our students to have grandparents visit for lunch are Thursday (9/24) and Friday (9/25).
Please remind your grandparent:
- · Our lunchtime is 10:56 – 11:25 and it goes quickly!
- · Lunch is priced Al Carte for adults – usually around $3.50.
- · Please bring small bills, as the cafeteria does not have large amounts of change on hand.
- · Please park in the front of the school and enter the building through the front entrance.
- · Sign in at the front office and head for the lunchroom!
We look forward to seeing you there!
