Japanese learned to use the sea. They used the sea for a source of food and water. Rugged terrain acted as a barrier to political unity.


Japan feudal society had district levels. Powerful warrior nobles controlled the country. Peasants farmed the land and the inheritance was passed on only to the sons.

Meiji Restoration

During the Meiji Restoration Japan modernized its economy. The Meiji Restoration were events that restored practical imperial rule to Japan. All feudal class privileges were destroyed.

Rape of Nanjinhg

Japanese Army forces brutally murdered hundreds of thousands of people. Soldiers and civilians. Japanese also burned one third of Nanjing's buildings. The horrific events are known as the Nanking Massacre or the Rape of Nanking. Women were also sexually assaulted.
