NOTES FROM THE NURSE…
Unfortunately Coronavirus has not left us and in fact appears to be making a comeback throughout the SVSD. Please be diligent in handwashing and social distancing. Avoid touching your face and utilize hand sanitizer if handwashing is not feasible. Some staff and students have returned to mask-wearing although it remains optional. Some have asked questions regarding the length of time coronavirus lasts on surfaces. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends washing clothing in the warmest cycle possible to kill the virus. Detergent plus bleach for whites and colored fabrics may help inactivate the virus in the wash. Do not shake the clothing. Immediately place laundered clothing in the dryer on the hottest cycle possible. The virus dies at temperatures above 133 *F.
Information is constantly changing but serves as a reminder of the importance of cleaning all surfaces. Coronavirus has been found to remain on plastic items such as keyboards for up to 72 hours; stainless steel (appliances, pots/pans) for up to 48 hours. A copper penny or copper cookware can host the virus for up to 4 hours. Coronavirus can live on cardboard up to 24 hours. On items such as furniture, paper and glass, coronavirus can survive up to 9 days! The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has deemed disinfectant brands such as Clorox and Lysol effective in eliminating the virus. Please be cautious as to not mix cleaning agents (such as bleach and ammonia) to help deter a dangerous reaction.
Wishing staff, students and families health and happiness as we welcome the Spring weather!
