Union Soldier LIfe
Leah Clark
Camps
Most of the time of the soldiers was spent writing letters home to their loved ones. The rest of their time was spent resting or eating. Some soldiers attended Church services as well.
Food
Union soldiers ate Hardtack- hard crackers, meat, flour, and cornmeal. They sometimes had molasses, salt and pepper, and coffee or tea.
Hospitals
Most of the procedures performed in the hospitals during the war were amputations. They were not sterile and did not have the right anesthetics to numb the pain. Most wounds became infected because they were not properly cleaned or bandaged.
Other Activities
Other activities that Union soldiers did during leisure time include:
- Card games
- Horseshoe
- Reading
- Team sports (i.e. Baseball)
