Room 212 News #20
January 28, 2018
Wednesday - Early Release, students dismissed at 1:29
Friday - Field Trip to Kensington
This is a full day trip (9:30 until about 2:00). We will spend most of the trip outside. Please dress your child for the weather. Layers are best, with all winter gear (snowpants, boots, hat, gloves). Currently, it looks like it will be in the low twenties while we are at the park.
Also, remember to pack a lunch and drink if you did not order one from school.
A decision to cancel the trip due to weather conditions will generally not be made until the morning of, so please send your student ready, even if it is cold or wet.
Please click here to review the parent letter with info for the trip. Also, you can see the weather guidelines the district uses when deciding to hold or cancel the trip.
Chaperones should arrive at 9:00 am, and be sure to have completed a background check.
Thank you! We have received many snack, tissue, and marker donations. They are appreciated!

Place Value
When students are studying place value, we want them to understand that the "place" of the digit affects its value. For example, in the number 24, the digit in the ones place has a value of 4 (or 4 ones). But the digit in the tens place has a value of 20 (or two tens). Students must understand the key vocabulary:
- digit (single digit, two digit, three digit)
- tens/ones place
- value (how much is the digit worth?)
- exchanging or regrouping (for example, trading 10 ones for a "long" tens block)
Students who are comfortable with these concepts are moving on to three-digit numbers.
Science Update
Our first creatures (that you can see without a magnifying glass) will be delivered the week of January 30th.
Valentine's Day/100th Day of School
It looks like the 100th day of school and Valentine's Day will be very close to one another. On Wednesday, February 14th students will be working with the number 100 in a variety of ways, and will also have the chance to distribute Valentine cards.
For the class list, click here. Please make sure if you choose to do cards, that there is one for each student (19). Your child may bring in a shoebox or tissue box to collect the cards, or we can use a lunch bag at school. I'll have extra Valentine cards if someone needs them.
