Message From The Principal

Westbrook Families,

I hope this message finds you and your family doing well. Spring is here and it is certainly a busy time of the year. This week our second grade students participated in a field trip to The Grove and we had Springman students visit our bilingual preschool classroom!

Next week we are looking forward to several events here at Westbrook. On Monday April 24, we are hosting our Family Connect Night here at Westbrook from 6:00-8:00 at night. We look forward to seeing our Westbrook and Glen Grove Families! We also have our Kindergarten Information Night on Wednesday from 6:00-7:00 for all incoming Kindergarten students and families. Thanks to our PTA the next sponsored school assembly will take place on Thursday. All students will have the opportunity to see a reptile show here at Westbrook!

We will also begin our CogAT testing for our second grade students next week. CogAT measures students’ learned reasoning abilities in the three areas most closely related to success in school:

  • The Verbal Battery measures students’ abilities to reason with verbal symbols and concepts. These reasoning abilities play an important role in reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing, and virtually all verbal learning tasks.
  • The Quantitative Battery measures students’ abilities to reason with quantitative symbols and concepts. These reasoning skills are significantly related to problem solving in mathematics and other disciplines.
  • The Nonverbal Battery measures students’ abilities to reason with geometric shapes and figures. To perform successfully, students must accurately implement strategies for solving novel problems.

The three separate batteries provide a broad perspective on each student’s learned reasoning abilities, identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses. For more information please see the e-mail communication from Dr. Silverman.

The first week of May is Teacher/Staff appreciation week! Thank you in advance to our PTA for all of the wonderful activities they have planned for the Westbrook staff! The same week we are also looking forward to our Kindergarten musical performances. Please be sure to pre-register for the event. This can be done by stopping into the Westbrook office or calling 847-657-2491. This will help ensure a quick entry to the performance on the day of the show!!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Patrick

Class Placement Feedback

Later this spring, the Westbrook staff and I will engage in our work to create the groups of children that will comprise our 2023-24 homeroom classes. The class placement process is one that takes considerable time and collaboration among our school team, and will not be truly finalized until August.

In creating classes, we strive to take into account all that we have already learned regarding the social, emotional, academic and creative aspects of every child. Our goal is to form balanced, heterogeneous classes in which each child can succeed. If you have additional information that you feel is important for us to consider when placing your child in a class for next school year, please share it with me in writing (or email: phoeft@glenview34.org) no later than Friday, April 28th. If your child will not be returning to Westbrook for the 2023-2024 school year because your family is moving or he/she will be enrolling in a private school, please let the front office know as soon as possible via email to mzenzola@glenview34.org and dcrask@glenview34.org.

Your thoughts about your child’s peer relationships and previous school experiences are certainly valued. Consistent with past practice at Westbrook School, however, please know that we are unable to honor requests for specific teachers. If you have any questions about the class placement process, please feel free to reach out!

Please join us for a Kindergarten Musical Performance!

Our kindergarten students will be getting together to perform songs that represent all of the wonderful things they have been learning in music.

  • Friday, May 5, 9:30am: Savage, Licato, Greiner
  • Friday, May 5, 1:30pm: Krueger, Stanley, Barron

We want to share a few details in advance:

  • All performances will be held in the front gym at Westbrook School.
  • Parking in our lot in a designated space may be challenging. We encourage you to carpool, and park in the empty lot across the street if needed.
  • Students may wear formal clothing for this performance.
  • Each performance will last about 30 minutes.
  • Each student will be able to have two guests attend their scheduled performance.

The safety and security of all of our students and staff at Westbrook are our priority, and we ask for your help by following District 34 safety and security protocols that require each guest to have their photo ID processed through our security system before being admitted into Westbrook.

To avoid lines in the front office and the greatest enjoyment of the show, we highly recommend that each guest who will attend the show stop by the main office or call the main office at 847-657-2491 the week before the show to pre check-in with their photo ID. The best times to call the main office are during 9:00am-11:00am and 1:00pm-3:00pm daily.

Thank you for your help!
