Reading
Fiction-
We will read books about Martin Luther King Jr. We will read a book written by his sister and a book by another author and compare their view points and how it affects the story they tell. We will also talk about character traits.
Nonfiction-
How does the author use text features to give information? How can I make inferences from facts?
Writing
We are going to work on narrative. We did a short opinion piece before the break and will come back to opinion for the last half of this nine weeks. We are going to work on fictional narrative and personal narrative for the next four weeks or so. This includes authors craft.
Grammar

action verbs, linking verbs, helping verbs, progressive verbs
Word Study
Greek and Latin Roots -

revoke- to call something back
vocal- having to do with voice

invoke- to call on for help or appeal
advocate- have a voice in favor of something
Math
Division
We are beginning division. We will review basic division and then head into Division of Larger Numbers. We will not learn the standard algorithm for long division. We will use partial quotients. Please try to refrain from teaching them the long division algorithm (how you and I learned it) if you can. Here is a video of how to do partial quotients if it confuses you (don't worry, it did me too when I first learned it, but it makes so much more sense to have students take out GROUPS of a number when dividing). http://learnzillion.com/lessons/28-solve-division-problems-with-remainders-using-partial-quotient
They will learn the standard algorithm next year in 5th.
Please keep reviewing multiplication facts. This becomes VERY challenging if they don't know their facts!
