Creative Writing Highlight
SGA would like to recognize some of our talented student writers. The following poem is from one of the students in RCSHS's creative writing class.
Focus is the Easy Part
It's a pain.
Truly it really is.
Sit still, be quiet and focus.
But the silence is so loud.
There's a light hum of the electricity in the lights.
But it isn’t enough.
I Need thumping and banging.
I need loud.
Somehow two medias of information are easier to consume at the same time than just one.
And the sitting.
Why the sitting?
At least it’s a swivel chair.
And I can turn quarter turns in each direction repeatedly.
Focus is the easy part.
Once I get my earbuds in,
and I swivel my chair,
and I bounce my leg,
and I do something with my left hand.
Because I feel so unbalanced if I don't.
If my right hand is doing my left hand must also.
Sometimes I claw at my neck.
Sometimes I tap.
Sometimes I spin a pen in my hand.
Most of the time I put my left hand under my left thigh.
The pressure works.
Ok now I can focus.
And suddenly it’s been two hours.
My stomach growls and I need to pee.
But I don't.
I’m Focused.
Another hour passes and I continue to ignore my body.
I’m Focused.
Finally something snaps me out of it.
Perhaps it's the pounding of my bladder.
Or my phone dies and the music stops.
Sometimes someone taps on my shoulder,
and I know I won't be able to return to my focused state.
Regardless of how, I'm done.
Well I’m not done.
I'm actually 2 weeks behind in classwork.
But what can I say,
Focus is the easy part.
