Compass Family Update

April 20, 2015

Big image
We had our first Family Sustainability Workshop on Monday. We had a big crowd and we made seed balls, fabric bags, and signs. Kirsten also provided families with a calendar of sustainable things to do at home. Thanks to everyone for participating!

Compass Farm Stand Is Coming Soon!

We recently received a grant from Urban Harvest (part of Slow Food NYC) and we will start our own Compass Farm Stand in the next couple of weeks. The grant has provided us with money to purchase a tent, tables, scale, and the initial produce to sell.

Our first graders recently launched a Community Study and they are working on setting up the farm stand and making plans for advertising, organizing, and pricing. We are still working out the final details with Slow Food and our farmer and we should have a start date soon. The farm stand will be open on Wednesdays around dismissal time.

Keep an eye out for signs and materials coming soon! We hope you will visit the Compass Farm Stand when it's open!

Also, thank you to Anna (First Grade Teacher) for taking the lead on this project. We appreciate your help!

Laundry Coop Help Needed for May and June

We have drastically reduced our consumption of paper towels in the past few months! Kids (and adults too) are now reaching for reusable towels and rags to clean tables for snack and lunch and to clean up any water spills throughout the day.

Thanks to all of the families who signed up to take a laundry shift or two so far. April is now covered thanks to your help! We still have spots available for May and June. Please sign up if you are able to help. Thanks so much!

Family School Collaborative (FSC) News:

Mark your calendars...our next FSC meeting is scheduled for Thursday 4/23 from 7-8 PM. Pizza and childcare will be provided. This will be a very important meeting where we make some big decisions about the future of our FSC...please join us!

If you have a specific idea or project that you would like the FSC to focus on next year, please plan to present it at this meeting. This presentation, or proposal, does not have to be overly formal, but just basic information about the idea, the goal, and any cost/needs associated with the idea. At the end of the meeting we will ask everyone to vote or prioritize what is most important to them. The results will inform how the FSC spends its efforts and funds going forward. Please e-mail a summary of your proposal to fsc@brooklyncompass.org by 4/16.

Do not hesitate to contact us with any questions at fsc@brooklyncompass.org!
