Background
George Herman Ruth (Babe Ruth) was born on Feb. 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland. Babe Ruth was one of American baseball's most famous, and talented players. He powered the New York Yankees to dynasty status, setting 56 of the sport's records along the way. His fame and his various nicknames transcended his sport. Throughout his professional life, he was one of the most recognizable figures in America. He was also 6 feet tall and weighed 215 pounds.
Babe Ruth Struggle
Some of Babe Ruth struggle was starting fights, drinking and using chewing tobacco. His ego was a big problem in the pros. As Ruth grew older, his huge body became too heavy for his slender legs. He died of throat cancer in New York City on Aug. 16, 1948. Some more struggles were living in poverty, watching his siblings die, and being sold out and traded to other teams. He also had to go through the Great Depression. Babe was to survive infancy and living in poverty.
Success/Accomplishments
Babe Ruth's biggest accomplishment was when he broke the home run record in 1927, totaling 60 home runs in one season. This record had also broken his personal record from the previous year, which was a total of 59 home runs. Some accomplishments he had was his hitting and pitching ability, especially hitting. He held the records for most home runs in one season (60) and most career home runs (714). Another accomplishment he had was when he went to Japan to promote baseball. He was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
Legacy
The main legacy of Babe Ruth's career was his home run. The most home runs hit in a single season by a player was 27. In 1919 , Babe Ruth hit 29 homers. He hit 54 the next season. He was a leader on the field and a leader off the field. Babe Ruth was a hardworking baseball player who practiced often. He also always helped children and was sympathetic to people in need. However, it was Babe Ruth's called shot in the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs that really cemented his legendary status and added to his legacy.
