Staff Memo
Sept. 20, 2013
PTO Welcomes over 600 on Friday evening
If you haven't tasted the Dads' Club hamburgers yet, plan on attending next year. After they grilll them, they soak them in beef broth and fresh garlic. Yum!
Thanks to those of you who attended. I know how glad your students were to see you.
Hats off to the PTO for another outstanding event.
Parent-Teacher Conference Expectations from Admin Center
It's that time of year to meet with families to let them know what their children are doing well and where they need extra support.
- You should not do conferences early so you can take a personal day Wednesday and have a longer vacation. We want to preserve that for emergency situations.
- Some grade levels have large class sizes. Admin is encouraging staff to schedule their conferences backwards by filling all slots on Tuesday and Wednesday and limiting any needed over-flow conferences to the Monday right after, or before school on Monday-Wednesday. In some cases, we have allowed overflow to the following Monday, (Oct. 29th this year) in a pinch.
- Principals need to stay and supervise extra conferences.
I realize some grade levels have large class sizes. Please make sure you work hard to schedule conferences for all of your parents. When your schedule is complete, please send a copy to me and the office staff. I will be scheduling my home life around additional conferencing. Also the office staff may need to assist parents who call to double check times and dates.
Questions? Please let me know.

Quotes on which to end
“Teachers can tell and talk, but only learners can learn.”
~Alden Blodget
“[W]hen you change how students talk in class, you change the way they think.”
~Paul Bambrick-Santoyo
“It’s one thing to say all students can learn, but making them believe it – and do it – can require a 180-degree shift in students’ and teachers’ sense of themselves and of one another.”
~Sarah Sparks
“You can’t just tell children to try hard without giving them strategies and supporting their efforts.”
Carol Dweck (ibid.)
“When we understand that we can build our intelligence, rather than it being fixed, we take risks. We are interested in learning from mistakes rather than focusing on how people see us and wanting to do things perfectly and quickly.”
Eduardo Briceno (ibid.)
