How does our Reading Profile inform our students' abilities?
― Kerry Patterson, Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High
Teachers,
I would like to go back to our discussion about set criteria for reading promotion/retention. Although it is true that at this time district has not set out a standard criteria for ELA retention, we can still communicate to our families how their child is doing in meeting and mastering standards. If we utilize a Reading Profile that is comprehensive and communicates a student's diverse reading ability, then we are promoting and/or retaining based on an extensive portrait of their child's capabilities. Therefore, as a grade level it is imperative to create a profile that matters.
Within your grade level meetings and teacher release days, please look closely at the Assessment Matrix (above) and decide as a team, to either keep what was agreed upon during the onset of the year, or remix your assessments to create a profile that will give you the best indication of a student's successes and struggles.
Thank you for all you do.
Student Council -
Student Council: This year we have 53 fourth and fifth graders who are running for student council office - yes 53! During the week of October 7th - 11th the candidates will be spending their time practicing their speeches and demonstrating their leadership qualities. On Friday, October 11th students will be delivering their speeches to an audience. We will be having two speech sessions. The morning 8:00 am speeches will be our candidates who are running for Historian, Public Relations, Spirit Director and Sergeant at Arms. The afternoon 12:30 pm speeches will be our candidates who are running for Treasure, Secretary, Vice President and President. Voting will take place that same day and the results will be posted at the end of the day.

First up from the counselor’s office:
> GATE Screening: Tuesday, Oct. 8 for all 2nd graders In Lab 23 (Wille) and Lab 24 (Burner) (unless you rather in class on Chromebooks). Wednesday, Oct. 9 for 4th grade: Cousino at 8:00, Bristol at 10:15 both in Lab 23. See schedule provided. GATE post-screen (second round): Nov. 4-20. I will send out a schedule and list of students late October for this round.
> Mentor Monday. I need students for the Mentor Program. Please complete the referral form I have emailed to all last week. So far we have five mentors committed. Thank you!
> SBAC Interim Assessments may start as early as Sept. 16. See email sent Friday regarding the video to watch to activate your account since we missed the first email. Please follow directions to create your new F#ncy!8 password and save it in a secret place. You will need to sign an electronic SBAC Affidavit once you click on the green TOMS button. Once you create your new password you can begin accessing the CAASPP Interim Assessments and Reporting System, as well as the extensive resources available in the Digital Library.
> SST information on students live in LROI. LROI>Applications>Student Study Team>search student (you may need to toggle to ‘18-’19 or ‘17-’18 school year to see previous SSTs). So far we have had two SSTs and two 504 Plan Meetings. Our school psychologist has already signed three Initial Assessment Plans for kiddos we had SSTs last Spring.
> Parent/Teacher Conferences in November: Please feel free to invite me to any parent/teacher conference if you would like me present. Remember I am only at Kettering T and W. You will need to make sure to give the first AT-RISK LETTER to all students that are At-risk of not promoting. We will get the LBUSD Promotion Standards this month...hopefully! 😊 We will provide you with your AT-Risk folder with copies of the Nov. Letter, suggestions on how to hold a parent/teacher conference, and parent resources to access in LBUSD to give to parents. Please show off all your interventions to your parents and ease their mind about progress and development for children this early in the year. If they have concerns, then let parents know that YOU will refer their student to the SST to discuss next steps. DO NOT encourage parents to write a letter to have their child assessed. Extra letters will be in the apple room. Please return folder to Yvette to hold until your March conferences. Thank you!
> Counselor Referral Forms: teachers, staff, parents, and students may complete a form and place in my box. Once I am back on campus I will attend to the referral forms asap. :-)
> SBAC/CAA/CAST test window: April 20 - May 29. A specific schedule will be coming soon to a theater near you. ;-D
> Sanford Harmony: So far I have had the honor to conduct SH Lessons in Mitchell, Highducheck, Fillipow, and Cousino. How are the rest of your SH lessons coming along? Let me know if you would like me to conduct a couple of lessons...I am available after lunch or anytime starting Oct. 20. I have to get past GATE testing. 😑
