Happy October Nieman Families!

Crazy to believe that we will be welcoming October on Saturday! We have had an amazing and busy September at Nieman. I would like to send a special thank you to Danna Martinez' family for bringing beautiful flowers for our entire staff this past month. It brought a smile to everyone and was such a thoughtful gift!

Picture day went off without a hitch (thank you Ms. Saunders) and all your children look simply adorable! Many were quite proud of themselves and how fancy they looked!

This past week the PTA hosted an amazing Chili and Paint Night! Thank you to all who attended, to our PTA volunteers who planned and hosted the event, and to Ms. Carter and Ms. Ellis for guiding us through the painting! The food was delicious and seeing everyone together was heartwarming! We hope that you will consider joining the PTA as the proceeds go straight back to our students!

This coming week is Anti-Bullying Awareness Week! We will be spreading awareness in a variety of ways, including through a spirit week- see the flyer below! Wear blue on Monday to kick off the week!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Fun Activities for Families

Eat Lunch With Your Child!

We are so excited to be able to allow visitors into the building again! One thing that is returning is the ability to eat lunch with your child! You may bring food in for them or have them get lunch from the café and then come and join you in the front entrance area. We have two circle tables set up so that you can enjoy time together. You will need to bring in your ID so that the office can scan it. Please email your child’s teacher ahead of time so that they know and can make sure your child goes to the correct spot that day. If something changes or you will be running late, please call the office that day to let them know as your child’s teacher may not see their email. We can then pass along the information.

Shawnee Mission North: Trunk or Treat

Join in on the fun October 26 @ 5-7pm for Trick or Treating located at Shawnee Mission North. There will be games in the Cafeteria and candy in the circle drive.

Faith & Blue Community Outreach Event

Saturday, October 8, 3-5 PM. Parking lot of Big Lots at 74th and Nieman. Join the Shawnee Police Department and several local churches for an afternoon of fun and community building. This is a free event and there will be free hotdogs, police equipment, bounce houses and more! Come out and meet the officers who help keep your community safe.

2022 Heartland Police Canine Competition

This event will be held Saturday, October 8 starting at 10 a.m. at the Shawnee Mission Schools Softball Complex at 6101 Maurer Road, Shawnee, KS. There's no charge to come watch local police K9s and their handlers compete in various events. Come see your Shawnee Police Department K9 units in action as they leap over high barricades and through windows! You can also buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win cool prizes or make a donation to benefit the National Police Canine Association.

Social Emotional Learning Updates

This past week I have been focusing on learning how to identify how our body and face feels when we are in a specific emotion. (I attached pictures) It has been great to see what the students write for their descriptive words for each of these emotions. We also discussed how it is okay to feel one feeling in more than one emotion.

Suicide Prevention Month

I have enjoyed going into classrooms and co-teaching for Suicide Prevention Month to talk about our safe trusted adults both here at Nieman and at home. We discussed scenarios of why we would need to go to our safe trusted adult and examples of who those people could be. At the end of the lesson, I had students write on a construction strip the name of their safe trusted adult at Nieman Elementary. Some students even requested for 10 slips of paper because they have 10 safe trusted adults! I feel like that is pretty amazing!

Nieman PTA is in search of a Yearbook Chairman. Our current chairman: Sommer Saunders is finishing out her last year as her youngest child is in 6th grade. Sommer would love to find someone to help her this year to take over starting the 23-24 school year. Without a Yearbook Chairman, there will be no yearbook for families and staff, so if you love to design, be creative and want to keep these school memories documented for families and staff this might be the perfect position for you! The Yearbook Chairman must also be a paid Nieman PTA member. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Sommer at
