Celebrating the Triumphs: Class of 2023 Commencement Ceremony
As the academic year drew to a close, our entire school community was preparing to celebrate the achievements of our graduating class. Our commencement ceremony marked the end of an era and the beginning of new journey for the Class of 2023.
The Class of 2023 has faced unprecedented challenges throughout their academic journey. From navigating through a global pandemic to adapting to remote learning, these graduates have demonstrated exceptional resilience. The commencement ceremony was a wonderful opportunity to honor their accomplishments, acknowledge the countless hours of hard work, dedication, and sacrifices that led them to this momentous occasion.
As our school continues to grow, so do our number of graduates. The Class of 2023 was Horizon Science Academy of Lorain's largest graduating class to date. This moved our commencement ceremony to the larger venue of The Palace Theatre in downtown Lorain. We are grateful to our keynote speaker, Marsalis Hammons, for his inspirational words for our graduates and their families. We are also grateful to all of stakeholders for dedicating their time and efforts to helping prepare our children for their futures.
As these graduates embark on their future endeavors, they carry with them the memories, lessons, and connections forged during their time in education. The Class of 2023 commencement ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with endless possibilities, and the world eagerly awaits to witness the impact these exceptional individuals will make.
Horizon Gives Back: Painting Bike Lanes in South Lorain
In a beautiful display of community spirit and dedication, two newly graduated students, Kennedy Short and Teresa Wyatt, joined forces with Horizon staff members, Mrs. Maloy and Mrs. Varner, members of the Lorain Connected community group, Lorain County Health Department, and City of Lorain workers to contribute their time and effort towards a meaningful project. On June 2nd, just a day after their graduation, these young individuals woke up early to participate in painting bike lanes in South Lorain, leaving a lasting impact on their community.
Recognizing the importance of safe and accessible transportation options, the volunteers rallied together to support the initiative of creating safer bike lanes in South Lorain. With the goal of enhancing the infrastructure for cyclists and promoting active lifestyles, this collaborative effort brought together community members, graduates, and city workers to work hand in hand towards a common objective.
The Lorain Connected community group has been instrumental in fostering unity, promoting civic engagement, and supporting projects that uplift Lorain County. By collaborating with this group, Horizon Science Academy, and the other volunteers aligned themselves with an organization committed to building a stronger and more connected community. The act of painting bike lanes not only contributes to the physical infrastructure but also signifies a commitment to creating a safer and more accessible environment for residents.
GEMS Brings Their Music Program to Horizon
Horizon Science Academy of Lorain was excited to host a summer music program this year. The 2023 Summer Music Camp was a collaborative effort between Great Expectation Music Students (GEMS), H. Excellence through Music, and Horizon Science Academy of Lorain. The camp aimed to provide a week of instruction and creative tools for students in music and arts. The program offered lessons in drums, piano, xylophone, vocals, and arts, catering to students from kindergarten to 12th grade. The camp was held here at Horizon Science Academy of Lorain and featured well-equipped instructors.
The Summer Music Camp saw a registration of over twenty-eight students. The camp was under the direction of Tommie D. Harris, who served as the CEO of H. Excellence, the Program Director of GEMS, and a teacher at HSA-Lorain. Lydia Lee, an HSA teacher, also played a role as one of the coordinators and vocal instructors.
The Great Expectation Music Program (GEMS) is a 501C3 organization that focuses on providing a positive outlet through music for youth. GEMS offers music instruction and mentorship primarily to children aged 7-19, especially those facing poverty and academic challenges in Lorain and the surrounding Lorain County. We are thrilled to partner with them in future programs and bring the arts to our students.
