Wednesday, March 10 is Final Day for In-Person Additional Support for Winter Trimester
Using criteria based on grade data, AVHS will extend a NEW round of invitations for in-person intervention on Wednesday, March 10. We will send the invitations via e-mail on the morning of Monday, March 8, and we request that families RSVP no later than Tuesday, March 9. Students who attended in-person intervention on February 24 and March 3 are NOT automatically invited for March 10; please watch your e-mail for an invitation.
AVHS Faculty and Staff are available for support for *all* students via Schoology, E-mail, and Zoom on Wednesdays from 9:30 - 1:40. Students can also work directly with teachers or counselors to request an in-person invitation.
Paul Tinder to Serve as AVHS Interim Athletic Director
We are excited to announce that Paul Tinder (pictured above right) has agreed to serve as interim Apple Valley High School Athletic Director.
As a long-time AVHS Assistant Administrator, Mr. Tinder has built and maintained relationships with students, families, and staff since 1999. Mr. Tinder collaborates with people to discover creative solutions to challenges. Mr. Tinder came to AVHS in 1996 as a social studies teacher, assistant coach for girls basketball, and track & field: jumps and hurdles coach. He served as interim AVHS Athletic Director in 2005 and we are thankful for the experience he will bring to the Athletic Department.
Mr. Tinder will partner with outgoing Athletic Director Virgil Jones (pictured above left) over the next two weeks as we explore and identify candidates for the Athletic Director position, which will be posted by the end of March. Additionally, former AVHS Athletic Director, Assistant Principal Pete Buesgens will oversee the stadium turf project and assist with scheduling. Any Apple Valley High School families or student-athletes who have questions about spring athletics schedules, registration, etc. please contact Wendy Beckman at email@example.com or 952-431-8205. Ms. Beckman will help to ensure questions are addressed by the appropriate person.
We are appreciative of all that Mr. Jones has done in this role and for Mr. Tinder’s support in the interim position through the transition period.
Black History Month Contest Winners Announced
Congratulations to AVHS freshman Zaria Hollins for winning our Black History Month contest honoring Black Achievement & Perseverance. Check out her awarding winning artwork and all of the other entries: https://youtu.be/iLDAFWfUH3M
We are proud to have engaged with AVHS alumni to create and launch a contest as part of our ongoing efforts to honor Black history and culture. Alumni supported the contest by generously donating gift cards as prizes and acting as a judging panel to decide the top place winners. This contest was just one of many efforts to celebrate Black History Month here at AVHS. Is it our intention to build upon these experiences to create a template we can use to honor other groups in the future.
Thank you to all of the talented students for your contributions, for the generous donor for sponsoring this event, and to our alumni panel of judges (Tierra Bunnell, Jordan CrockettElizabeth Mukanga, and Tyson Coleman).

How to Help a Teen Out of a Homework Hole
Empathy will get you further than anger. What students who have fallen behind need most are problem-solving partners.
Work together to diagnose the problem/prioritize courses with a to-do list. This isn't about you being in trouble or getting off the hook," you might say. "It's simply about figuring out what's going wrong so we can solve the right problem."
Create a routine with one or more distraction-free “power hours” each day.
Use available resources like 1-on-1 help with teachers on Zoom from 1:45 to 2:45 pm each day or in-person with a teacher request on Wednesdays.
Step back to see the big picture. As the NYT author writes, “This year, more than most, might be one where students gain a deeper understanding of how they respond when feeling overwhelmed and how to ask for help or rebound from setbacks- lessons that they will draw on long after the pandemic is gone.”
