Art and Nature
“Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches.” Psalms 104:12
Inspired by the 19th Century artist John James Audubon, Eighth Grade students created artworks of various media with birds of America as their subject matter.
Students learned how Audubon’s story is one of triumph over adversity. He never gave up on his art, his talent and his love of nature. His work shows the beauty of nature, God’s gift to us. His art also inspires us to have a deeper appreciation and conservation of birds and their habitats.
After a lesson about John Audubon’s life and his art work, students chose a bird of America they wanted to study and use for the subject of their artwork. Students had a choice of the art media and technique to create their artwork. Most students chose to draw or paint, because they feel more comfortable using this medium.
Some students tried sculpting. They used air dry clay to sculpt their bird artwork. Then students painted on final details.
One student chose to create their artwork in yarn.
Students researched information about their bird: the scientific name, colors and background habitats. This information helped students to add more interest and detail to their final composition.
