Center Township Weekly Update
November 11, 2022
Greetings CT Families
Veterans are men and women who have or are serving in America's Armed Forces. Veterans Day is a celebration to honor all of America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. It is also a day for reflection and for remembering.
Center Township Elementary held its first Veterans Day Assembly this past week. The assembly was designed to help the students learn about the importance of the day. Our CT Fifth Grade Chorus performed two selections; “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Heart of America”. Retired Sergeant Major, Sam Zurzolo, and two other U.S. Marine Corp veterans served as the honor guard in the presentation of the flag. David Straite led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance. The third-grade students created an acrostic poem and posters to perform for the audience of students and veterans.
It was an outstanding opportunity for the students to learn about the importance of the day and show their appreciation for our veterans.

Text Feature Surgery
Mrs. West’s second graders performed Text Feature Surgery this week in their classroom. Before they could perform surgery, they became “Surgical Residents” and had to go through Medical School. They spent time learning about non-fiction text features, why they’re important, how they help them as they are reading, and becoming experts on how to use text features to make sense of what they are reading.
Mrs. West set up the classroom before students arrived so they would be excited from the moment they came in the door. The classroom door looked like the entrance to an operating room and had hospital signage. The "operating tables" were covered and the "doctors" found their gloves, face masks and wipes (for sanitizing their surgical tools) in a basket in the middle of the tables. There were checklists of the steps the "doctors" needed to follow to perform their surgeries so they knew exactly what to do. Each patient had a list of symptoms and students had to decide which text feature would help them based on their symptoms. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience while working hard to apply the information they have been learning.
Ah, Music!
This week second graders read the nonfiction text Ah, Music by author-illustrator Aliki. The book tells a story about different ways to make and enjoy music and various aspects of playing instruments. Rachel Fagan, mother of a second grade student in Mrs. Srock’s room, heard about the story being read and offered to share her talent and love of music with all the students in the grade in an assembly.
The students enjoyed listening to a variety of instruments played by Mrs. Fagan as well as a display of her operatically trained voice. The second graders were then led through the opportunity to make their own music. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed engaging in body rhythm music.
