Weekly Updates for the week of October 12th

What's Happening This Week?

· Writer's Workshop: How do we edit and revise our writing? What should a published writing piece look like?

This week we will be working on finishing the editing and revising process for our personal narratives. We will then begin publishing our writing. My goal is to have these completed on Friday.

· Reader's Workshop: How do use and cite evidence from a text to support our thinking?

This week we will discuss mood again. We will be identify a "mood" word and use evidence from the text to support our thinking. We will also be working on identify key events and the problem/solution in a story. The students will continue to write reader's responses about what they are reading.

· Math Workshop: What strategies do we use when adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers and across zeros?

We will be discussing different strategies used when adding and subtracting. We will be adding and subtracting 5 to 6 digit numbers with and without regrouping.

· Science: What is the Scientific Method?

We will be discussing the Scientific Method and what scientists do to get answers. We will be doing a paper airplane investigation this week. The students will pick a variable to test (paper or how its made).

I sent home a new homework sheet on Friday that has the reading log and a place to record math facts.

Reading Log:

The students need to read at least 100 minutes by next Friday. They do not have to read every night as long as they get their 100 minutes read. I have changed the reading log to make it less confusing. The students need to write the date, the title of the book, and how many minutes they read that day. You will just to sign it one time.

Math Facts:

The students need to practice their math facts at least 3 times a week. I know there have been some kinks figuring out Hooda Math. If you can't get the report to send, just write a note in the agenda. Also, the students need to enter their names. Some have entered my name so I do not know who completed it.

Moby Max:

Moby Max is an online tool the students can use to practice our core subjects at home. I will be sending log in information home on Monday. I will also be taking the students to the netbook lab to complete the pre-assessments they need to do.
