Shoemaker Newsletter
February, 2020
Dear Families,
Can you believe that we have yet to have a snow day?! What a pleasure to have the gift of uninterrupted instruction and learning in January!
Thank you so much for your support and help with our PTO Read-a-thon. We had another successful year and could not do this without you! We look forward to seeing many of our families at Bingo Night on February 7th. Due to fire capacity numbers, Bingo Night is sold out. Thank you so much for your overwhelming interest and understanding.
I am thrilled to tell you that we filled our Principal’s 100 Club board in late January and the ten students who were in the winning row had a delicious pizza lunch with Mrs. Vogel!
I hope you have a wonderful February!
Warmest regards,
Jacqueline Vogel

Read Across America Celebration:
Shoemaker will be celebrating Read Across America and
Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 5th. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading. We are asking every Shoemaker student to donate $1.00 in an effort to pass on our love of reading to a school less fortunate. With the money, we will purchase books and add them to the EHS Key Club book drive. These books will then be presented via the Cops ‘n’ Kids program. Money will be collected the week of March 2 -6th. Thank you in advance for sharing in the love of reading.
Celebrate the week with some fun!
Participate by wearing something different each day!

Counselor's Corner:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Wow! I can’t believe the school year is half over already. The time has really flown. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting all of our Community Service projects so far. We took a break this past month to help support the PTO with the Read-a-thon. However, the students from the Community Service Club were still busy and they participated in the Heifer Project. They spent the month of December collecting change at home and they raised $255. We will let you know what they decided to purchase in the next newsletter.
Coming up in February we will be collecting dog and cat food and supplies for a local no-kill animal shelter. (The club has to decide between three options) Donations can be placed in the boxes in the lobby. They are always happy to receive old towels and blankets too. We will collect items from February 3rd until February 21st. On February 14th we will be kicking off our Pennies Campaign for Patients for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Please look for the flyer your child will be bringing home so you can see how your family can donate online. Thank you so much.
We will finish up the year with a book drive in April, so start looking through your children’s books and begin saving them for our drive. Thank you.
If you have any questions, please call me at 610-965-1626 ext 1 or email me at bringer@eastpennsd.org.
Thank you again,
Mrs. Ringer

Links to Learning:
Do you ever feel like your child struggles to focus on the task at hand, particularly when it comes to school work? Here are some benchmarks for focus expectations, as well as tips on helping to increase your child’s attention and focus. While there is no quick fix for increasing focus and attention, engaging in the activities and strategies below can certainly help!
Restrict screen time (TV, video games and tablets)- no more than 30 minutes a day!
Use a clock or timer to complete certain assignments and tasks.
Set goals to practice concentration.
Set a few goals that will increase attention span, like:
Listen for 15 minutes without interrupting
Read for 15-30 minutes a day without taking a break.
If I start an activity, I will spend at least 8 minutes doing it.
Play outdoors! Studies show that there is a direct correlation between exercise, IQ and school performance.
Craft activities encourage a child to develop his tolerance for frustration, attention span, eye hand coordination, and problem solving skills.
Board games require a good attention span, develop sitting tolerance, and teach social skills like sportsmanship and turn taking. Other good choices: jigsaw puzzles, word games, and card games
