Classroom Procedures
Mr. Church's class
Welcome!
When you enter, there will always be a Bellringer on the board for you to do. Before the bell rings, use this time to sharpen pencils or get situated and then get started on the Bellringer. It's also a good idea to go ahead and write the agenda for the day as well.
Agenda:
On the board daily will be our agenda. What we are doing and why we are doing it. There you will find the essential question for the unit, the standards we are working on that day, the activities and assignments that we are going to do, and any homework that will be assigned. It's important that you get a planner or a notebook, and make sure to write that down each day. It will help you to understand what you learned and what you need to do to succeed in this class.
Turning in Homework:
At the beginning of class, if you have any homework to turn in, please do so. There is a black bin on my small filing cabinet. It's in front of the football helmet. Place any work that needs to be turned in in that bin and I will collect it at the end of each period.
Any work turned in with no name will be put in the no name bin behind the smart board, underneath the calendar. If you find one that can be proven to be yours, you can show me and I will let you claim it.
Missed work:
There will be a missed work folder on one of my side tables in the future, so if you miss any handouts they will be stapled together and put in the bin with your name on it. This is to save me time during class, and to make it easier for you to claim what work you have missed. It will be emptied each quarter when grades are finalized.
If you lost a handout and need another let me know and I will get one for you. Be aware that I am working on a limited printing budget and if I have to see you again and again to get replacements on printouts that I have provided, we will have a discussion and you will more than likely not have that privilege any longer. Copies cost money.
Sharpening pencils:
If you need to, please sharpen your pencils at the beginning of class as to not be a disruption. The sharpener is at the front of the room on the door behind the smartboard. Be careful, the smartboard has a lot of wires coming out of the back, so go around it on the right where there are no wires. Work smarter not harder.
The pencil sharpener is for pencils ONLY. No crayons, coloring pencils, or god forbid... pens. Anything besides a pencil will damage the blades and we won't have a working sharpener in this class. It's the only one we have, so be careful with it.
During Class
Bathroom:
You are almost adults and it is expected that you take care of any bathroom needs you have before class or after. That said, if you have an extreme need I will allow you to go. The bathroom pass and log are in the back of the room next to the door. Wear the pass, sign out on the log and be sure to sign back in when you return. Failure to take care of the pass, failure to put the pens back into the holder, or failure to complete the log will take away this privilege for the remainder of the quarter.
Just be smart and plan your trips according to the schedule, like all of your teachers do.
Supplies:
If you forgot your backpack and don't have paper or pencil, I will let you borrow a pencil or have some paper. Not for free, though. You will have to leave me your phone if you want them. Once you give me back the pencil or return to the desk at the end of the period if you just borrowed paper and I will give your phone back.
Supplies aren't cheap. Teachers pay for them out of their own pockets. With the sheer number of students we have it would never be plausible or right for us to supply you throughout the year. So when I run out of paper and pencils, that's it. There will be none left. Please be sure to get what supplies you need when you need them. The list is on the syllabus.
Phones:
Unless it is an activity where you can use the phone, it is expected that it be put away during instruction. If it is out I will ask you to put it away once as a courtesy. After that point I may ask you to give it to me. Don't stress, that just means you will get it back after class. But if it becomes a constant problem, I will talk to discipline and may send your phone to them for your parents to pick up.
Look, I get it. I love my phone. I often want to check my feed or my apps, but I resist that urge to do my job. I expect you to do the same.
Well behaved classes who follow this rule may earn the ability to listen to music while they work during the day, so think of that next time you see a neighbor checking Instagram while I am teaching. Remind them.
Movement:
Good students are where they need to be when they need to be there. If I am lecturing or you are watching a video, you need to stay in your seat. If it's group work, stay in your group. Pairs? Stay with your partner. Need a book for an activity, go get it and have a seat after. Don't be where you don't need to be. Don't walk around the room at odd times... Let's all be where we need to be and do our jobs.
Seating
Now, if your class excels and is well behaved.. I might allow you to choose your own seats at one point. But if that happens and we have problems, then you will lose that privilege for the year and never get the chance again. So be aware of your behavior and act accordingly.
End of class
Any books will need to be returned to their area in the back of the room or the bookshelf. If you were using any supplies in my supply closet, they will have to be returned. Do not leave my supply closet or book shelves in disarray. Treat them kindly.
Desks should be left as they were when you arrived, any and all trash needs to be in the garbage.
If there is an exit slip, please put it in the bin on my small filing cabinet to receive credit.
Odds and ends
Talking: Don't do it. Talk on your own time or when I allow you to work together. This class time is needed to get you where you need to be. Graduated and on to the next step.
Copying: Don't do it. It's not "helping" your friend to copy. If I catch you, I will post it on my wall of shame and BOTH people will get a zero.
Eating and Drinking: As long as you don't spill anything or disrupt the class, I don't care. If you are distributing Takis to the whole class or even a section of it, I am going to tell you to put it away. Failure to follow these guidelines will mean that you lose the ability to eat in class.
Pet peeves: People talking over me. Shooting paper into the garbage bin from across the room. Don't do these things. Raise your hand if you need help, walk to the bin to toss your garbage. It's easy.
