3rd Grade Newsletter

In writing we are beginning to work on personal essays. During this time your child will have the opportunity to write a personal essay about a person that they admire. They might write about a family member, friend, neighbor, historical figure, or a celebrity. This focus will last approximately three weeks.


We are currently in Unit 4 Week 2/Assessment January 15th

Essential Question: How can you use what you know to help others?

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Comprehension Strategy: Ask and Answer Questions

Comprehension Skill: Point of View

Vocabulary Strategy: Prefixes

Vocabulary Words: achievement, apologized, attention, audience, confidence, embarrassed, realized, and talents

Spelling pattern: Plural Words

Unit 4 Week 3/Assessment January 22nd

Essential Question: How do animals adapt to challenges in their environment?

Genre: Expository Text

Comprehension Strategy: Reread

Comprehension Skill: Cause and Effect

Vocabulary Strategy: Context/Sentence Clues

Vocabulary Words: alert, competition, environment, excellent, prefer, protection, related, and shelter

Spelling Pattern: Variant Vowels


In math we are currently working on division. Please continue to work on the math facts.

We will soon start on time. This will include telling time in different ways and elapsed time.

Unit Studies

We are currently working on a unit in health about family and social health. This unit talks about ways to show responsibility and approaches to problem solving. It also talks about making choices that are healthy.

Field Trip

We have the opportunity to go on a field trip to Morrill Hall. This goes along with our science unit on fossils. We will go on two separate mornings. We will leave Cavett at 9:30 and we should be back around 11:40. Your child will be transported by bus.
