Virgil / story, Steve Orlando ; art, J.D. Faith
"Betrayed, beaten, and banished by his own, an outed cop fights his way across Jamaica to save his man and get revenge! Virgil thought he was safe on the police force, but his gun and his attitude can't protect him from his own secret - he's gay. For thirty years he's had two lives. In the uniform he's the toughest on the street. Out of uniform he's a loving boyfriend. But when his own precinct turns on him, his worlds explodes. They put his name in the paper, raided his house, and took his lover. They left him bleeding in the ocean. They shouldn't have left him alive."

Woman rebel: the Margaret Sanger story / Peter Bagge
"In his signature cartoony, rubbery style, Bagge presents the life of the birth-control activist, educator, nurse, mother, and protofeminist from her birth in the late nineteenth century to her death after the invention of the birth control pill. Balancing humor and respect, Bagge makes Sanger whole and human, showing how her flaws fueled her fiery activism just as much as her compassionate nature did. Sanger's life takes on a whole new vivacity as Bagge creates a fast-paced portrait of a trailblazer whose legacy as the founder of Planned Parenthood is still incredibly relevant, important, and inspiring."

In honor of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in Manhattan, considered the beginning of the modern gay rights movement in the U.S., June is celebrated as LGBT Pride Month. The first pride parade took place a year afterwards, in 1970, to mark the anniversary of Stonewall. Learn more about the Stonewall Riots through the documentary series Before Stonewall and After Stonewall available through Films on Demand.
You can also read Mike Funk's comic on Stonewall and transgender activist and drag queen Sylvia Rivera here.
