Culturally Responsive Teaching & English Language Learners
I am a big fan of Culturally Responsive Teaching although I didn’t know the work of Geneva Gay and her award winning book, Culturally Responsive Teaching: Theory, Research, and Practice in 2000. Gay defines culturally responsive teaching as using “the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, and performance styles of diverse students to make learning more appropriate and effective for them.” This work could certainly be applied to English language learners although most subsequent work on culturally responsive teaching has been applied to African and Native American students. Here are some ideas based on Gay’s work that I have applied to English language learners on everythingESL.net.
Resources for Learning about Other Cultures & Languages
One of the foundational pieces for learning more about your English Language Learners (ELLs) is finding out more about their cultural background and learning some about their native language (L1). Check out these resources available online to help you learn more about languages and cultures.
What does the first day of school look like around the world?
A while ago I came across a fun article about a great first day of school tradition in Germany and their sugar cones [Zuckertüte]. It was different from what we have in Russia, but still a definite celebration. As I met many people from different countries around the world I was surprised to find out that first, the tradition to celebrate the first day of school is not part of the norm in a lot of countries, and second, when and how the first day of school goes in different countries is different and interesting.
Read about school cultures and celebrations from around the world.
Scaffolding Instruction for English Language Learners: Resource Guides for EngageNY Mathematics
The new Scaffolding Instruction for English Language Learners Resource Guide for Mathematics provide guidance to educators on how to take the curriculum materials on EngageNY and provide additional scaffolds for ELL students according to their level of English language proficiency. The resource guides are aligned to the levels in New Language Arts Progressions and provide examples of how to apply the Progressions to the EngageNY curriculum. However, they can be cross-walked easily to the WIDA English Language Development proficiency levels.

Virtual Field Trips
by Kennedy Schultz
Helping kids learn about the world can be an exciting adventure for both adults and kids. When I teach about the Chateaux of the Loire Valley in France or ancient Mayan sites in Mexico, I’m always looking for kid-friendly resources that can provide accurate information and engaging authentic pictures that hold the attention of little ones. Since my field trip budget is pretty limited, I especially love websites that offer virtual tours and live webcams to show kids what it REALLY looks like in another world location.
OSDE Title III Focus Group for Oklahoma's Academic Standards
Good Morning Title III-A and ELL Educators,
Thank you for signing up for our focus group to review and provide feedback on the Oklahoma Academic Standards third draft during our last Title III AMAO Accountability Plan Update meeting on September 8th, 2015. The writing team is working very hard and has provided us with a wonderful opportunity to be included in the process. As we talked about in the meeting, please extend the invitation (and of course the website address) to your Federal Programs/Title III/ELL Administrators, Coordinators, and Teachers for their feedback and participation as well.
At the bottom of this email is the announcement and invitation for the Standards Feedback Toolkit that you can copy and paste in your communication with those educators in your districts. The toolkit is now available on-line at the following address:
