Prestons Post
Term 4, Week 3
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to our Week 3 newsletter. We finally seem to be having some beautiful weather after more rain this week and are hoping that our oval dries out so that we can finally get back out and play. Unfortunatley two of our classrooms sustained water damage after the storm on Monday. I wanted to say a huge thank you to the teachers and their students for their flexibility and resilience as they have dealt with flooding rooms and relocating while their rooms are dried out. We are hoping that they will be back in their classes next week. The department are arranging for remediation works to ensure that these rooms do not flood again.
Stage 2 Excursion
On Thursday our Stage 2 students travelled to Wollongong University for a fabulous and engaging excursion to the Innovation Centre. Our students certainly made Prestons Public School proud with their respectful behaviour. Thank you to the teachers for ensuring that our students always have exciting and engaging opportunities.
School Uniform
The number of students not wearing our school uniform is slowly starting to increase. Please remember that our uniform includes;
- maroon polo for Yr K-4
- white polo for Yr 5-6
- maroon shorts, long pants, skirt or skorts
- grey shorts or long pants
- maroon sport shorts with a yellow stripe
- maroon sports shirt
- School tunic
- Maroon jumper or jacket
- Maroon hat
Please note that black tights are not a part of our uniform and should not be worn unless they are underneath shorts or skirts. Coloured jumpers or jackets should not be worn.
Students who are representing our school for PSSA or excursions must wear their full school uniform. This is a safety issue so that supervising teachers are able to easily identify students when off site. Students not in uniform will be provided with the correct uniform so that they can safely attend the excursion.
Our uniform looks fabulous when worn correctly by our students and it certainly conveys a sense of pride and belonging to our school. Thank you to our families for supporting us with this expectation. If you are struggling financially, student assistance is available.
World Teachers' Day
This Friday is World Teachers' Day in Australia and I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge every single one of our teachers and to recognise their relentless commitment to our learners. We certainly have amazing and dedicated teachers at Prestons and I feel privileged to work along side each and every one of them.
We hope you have had a wonderful week. Don't forget to ask your child what they are learning at school.

Year 7 Placement in a Selective High School in 2024 (Year 5 Students 2022)
Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, and by using specialised teaching methods.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2024, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply and the link to the online form will be available in early-October 2022 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.
Applications open on 18 October 2022 and close on 16 November 2022. You must apply before the closing date.
You must submit only ONE application for each student.
The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 4 May 2023.
Parents and Carers with no internet access are advised to access computers at a public library.
Classroom Chat with 1 Giraffes
1 Giraffes have had an amazing start to Term Four. We had a ZOO-per time on Monday exploring the amazing Sydney Zoo with our buddies in 1 Lions. We loved sharing all our knowledge about native Australian animals and learning many new interesting facts about animals from Africa and Asia.
We have been persevering in all areas of our learning and have been working on developing our fluency and expression when reading aloud. This term we have loved using our creativity to create imaginative texts with sizzling starts. Our authors have been utilising their phenomenal vocabulary, similes and emotive language to create a picture in the head of our reader.
Check out our featured author of the week below:
The King of Winter
Snow gracefully descended upon the icy world, as it did, a small tear cascaded the cheek of the solitary winter king. Ice crystals and snow particles followed him everywhere he went. These crystals created an icy wonderland of their own.
By Travis
In Mathematics, we have been learning about finding the area of two-dimensional shapes using formal and informal units. We have loved sharing our understanding and processes through our daily ‘Number Talks’, exploring the most efficient strategies that we know and applying them to problem solve.
We can wait to face the many learning challenges to come this year as we prepare for a new adventure in Year Two!
Classroom Chat with 1 Flamingos
Week 3, Term 4 2022 already!! The Flamingos were sooo excited to be back at school after the Spring school holidays. Our classroom is a happy, safe place to be with our Tree Frog friends, that’s why we are the TREEMINGOS, and learn something new every day. This term we are learning about imaginative texts and focussing on interesting adjectives and detailed sentences in our writing. In Maths we have been using lots of hands-on materials to explore the concepts of fractions and 2D space. For Science and Technology our unit is titled Earth and Space – “ Under Southern Skies.” It focusses on how we can investigate the observable changes that occur in the sky and on the land.
The highlight of the term so far was our excursion to Sydney Zoo. The children were so excited to venture out and about. The bus ride was just the beginning of a great day. The Flamingos saw native Australian animals, walked through a nocturnal enclosure and an aquarium. We had lunch next to an enormous crocodile. We spent the rest of the day walking around the zoo checking out the elephants, tigers, giraffes, meerkats, just to name a few. We had recess watching the baboons and we could not stop laughing at their games. What an amazing experience to visit this zoo. We were all very tired at the end of the day!!
When you meet a Flamingo ask them about the Term 4 learner quality – RESILIENCE – and what it means!!
Classroom Chat with 4 Killerwhales
This week in 4 Killer whales we have been enjoying having Miss Higgins in the classroom learning about characterisation. We have really enjoyed having Miss Higgins in our room this term.
Also this week Killer Whales got to attend the stage 2 science excursion to the University of Wollongong Innovation campus. Here the students were able to visit the campus and engage in a range of hands on science experiments and investigations. We really enjoy the planetarium, it felt like we were really in space! The students also watch an exciting science show where we learnt all about liquid nitrogen. Overall we have an awesome day filled with amazing learning.
