Vasek's Vision
Our Weekly Classroom Newsletter
Week of September 3rd, 2013
What did we do this week?
Reading- We learned how to choose a “Just Right” book using the I PICK method. We learned about the behaviors of a Real Reader. We extended our stamina as we read to self and practiced Read/Listen to Someone Read. We learned and wrote about our schema (knowledge we have in our brains). Also, we made Text to Self connections with our books. We had a Library orientation and checked out library books.
Writing- As a class we set up the rules and activities within a Writer’s Workshop setting. We continued to write from our life experiences. We studied a chart that highlights the routines of the Writers Workshop in order to develop our writing skills.
Math- We worked on our math assessments and completed our graphing menu work. We worked on ways to compose a Math magic number and solved the wheels in the park problem.
Social Studies- Our class discussed and developed our understanding of social studies vocabulary: community, citizenship, responsibility, and rules/fair. We wrote our idea first and worked with a partner to discuss and hear another person’s idea. Next, we learned the complete definition and drew an illustration of the word. Also, we practiced our Stallion behaviors in all area of the school.

Homework Information
Homework begins next week, September 9th. Please read it with your child and decide the number of assignments you would like to do. Variety is built into the Homework assignments. The choices are determined by the concepts and skills taught during the prior week(s). During 2nd grade you can help your child complete the assignments. Great learning is underway! Remember to staple all of the pages/sheets together!
