Health Tip of the Week
Help children stay active
In addition to being fun for children, regular physical activity has many health benefits, including:
Strengthening bones.
Decreasing blood pressure.
Reducing stress and anxiety.
Increasing self-esteem.
Helping with weight management.
Children ages 3 through 5 years should be active throughout the day. Children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 years should be physically active at least 60 minutes each day. Include aerobic activity, which is anything that makes their hearts beat faster. Also include bone-strengthening activities such as running or jumping and muscle-strengthening activities such as climbing or push-ups. See details. Remember that children imitate adults. Start adding physical activity to your own routine and encourage your child to join you.
Remember that small changes every day can lead to success!

Gwinnett County Youth Commission
The Gwinnett Youth Commission is a year-long leadership development program for high school-age students in Gwinnett County. GYC focuses on personal and professional development, civic engagement, and public service. Gwinnett’s Youth Commissioners are representative voices of the County’s youth and serve as representatives to its elected officials.
Students who participate in this program will:
- Earn volunteer service hours, build lasting relationships, and become better equipped to serve our vibrantly connected community.
- Attend behind-the-scenes tours of county government departments and facilities.
- Meet with elected and appointed officials to discuss ways youth can affect change in the community.
There is no cost to participate in this program. Meals are provided during the summer training sessions, however transportation to and from all GYC events is the participant’s responsibility.
To be considered for the program, youth must:
- Be a resident of Gwinnett County
- Attend a school in Gwinnett County (Gwinnett County Public Schools, Buford City Schools, private, home school, or charter schools)
- Be a rising freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior in the 2023-2024 academic year
- Submit a completed application.
Interested candidates must complete an application, to which eligibility will be verified. The application deadline for the 2023 – 2024 cohort is Friday, April 7 at 10:00pm. Accepted Youth will be notified by early May.
Please contact Community Outreach Programs Coordinator Michael Rabalais at Michael.Rabalais@gwinnettcounty.com with any questions.

The GCPS Book Mobile brings the library to our students during the summer! This decked-out school bus travels to different apartment complexes and neighborhoods each week throughout the summer and helps prevent the "summer slide" by providing kids with high-quality, diverse books.
The annual Book Mobile 5K is the only fundraiser that contributes to this cause. This year, the 5K is on Saturday, May 6th at 8:00 am at the ISC. Early-bird registration is $25 for the 5K and $18 for the Fun Run. Groups of 4 get the family discount and pay only $90. (Everyone under 18 receives a FREE BOOK to add to their home library!)
If you can't make it on race day, you can also choose to do the virtual 5K to receive your t-shirt in the mail, or, just donate to the cause! (A $100 donation gets your name added to the back of the t-shirt!)
Don't forget to mention McClure Health Science High School when you register! The school with the most registrations gets a FREE visit from the Book Mobile!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email Laura Sly at laura.sly@gcpsk12.org.
