Warren E blast, May, 5th, 2016
Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
While I was enjoying the FOW fundraising dinner at Hopkins Inn on Friday evening, I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Elma Ohmen Aldridge. Mrs. Aldridge and her family were celebrating her 92nd birthday by participating in the fundraiser to support Warren School. She told me that she graduated from the Warren Consolidated School in 1938. Originally, she attended classes in another building down the road. She transferred to the new white school, which is now the Warren Public Library, upon its completion. Mrs. Aldridge has fond memories of the school, where she learned in a multi-age environment. My husband, friends, and I enjoyed speaking with this vibrant woman and hearing her talk nostalgically about her childhood. I was reminded once again that Warren is a very special community with amazing residents and a rich past!
ASAP's Celebration of Young Writers
Congratulations to Charlie Brodhead, who has been selected for the second year in a row to have her piece read at ASAP's Celebration of Young Writers. She chose to dedicate her piece to her teacher, Mrs. Heather Twyeffort. Nearly 200 students across Connecticut submitted their writing, and 10 pieces were chosen to be read at the event, which will take place on Saturday, June 4th, at The Gunnery in Washington, CT. Here is her award-winning poem:
Day after day
Night after night
I am longing to take flight
My wings are straining under chains
Rusted from the rain
My family is torn away
Gone forever, you may say
Day after day
I am up with sun
Working from dawn until the day is done
The work is tough
My hands are rough
Night after night
The moon shines bright
My hope is vivid and strong tonight
Open will be my door
And I shall be a slave no more
Thank you, Friends of Warren School!
We also thank the FOW for subsidizing our field trip to Sound Waters on Tuesday, May 10th. We are looking forward to learning about the ecosystem of Long Island Sound through hands on exploration. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the sun will decide to join us on this trip!
Best wishes,
