Welcome Back from Mr. Rogers
Welcome to the new school year!!! We are so excited to have the opportunity to partner with you in teaching your children! And it is a partnership. You have invested heavily in your child’s life to this point and we appreciate being invited to help you continue their growth. There are four areas in which we can work together to achieve our mutual goal of creating the best educational experience for each of our students. These four areas are respect, responsibility, safety, and showing effort.
As we partner with you, we will demonstrate respect in our communication and behavior in all our relationships with you and your children. An example of this is how we shake hands with our students on a daily basis, looking them in the eye and addressing them by name. Another example is how we speak with the adults around us. If we expect our students to be respectful, we must teach them what this looks like. Because you are our partners, we ask that you would make every effort to demonstrate to your children what respectful communication and behavior looks like.
Another area we encourage is the area of responsibility. We demonstrate responsibility by showing up daily to teach your children. Responsibility is demonstrated by having prepared and effective lesson plans. You demonstrate responsibility to your children by getting up and going to work on a daily basis. Everything we do is setting an example for our children. And believe me, they are watching. Because we demonstrate responsibility daily, we challenge our students to demonstrate responsibility by showing up every day for school and turning in homework.
Safety is of utmost importance to an excellent education. Our students must be safe physically and emotionally. Teachers and parents continually demonstrate safe choices by protecting our students from dangerous situations and people. By doing so, we are teaching our kids to make good, safe choices in the situations they find themselves in and the people they choose to surround themselves with. We are excited to partner with you in creating a safe environment for learning.
Finally, everything we as teachers and parents do, demonstrates effort or lack of effort. By demonstrating persistence in the face of failures and difficulties we are teaching our children the effort necessary to succeed. If they see us put forth tremendous effort, they will do the same. Therefore, as we partner together for the success of our children, let's encourage each other daily to put forth the tremendous effort we expect our children to learn and demonstrate.
Welcome to a new year of learning in partnership. We are so excited to take on this tremendous privilege of helping shape your children into respectful, responsible, safe adults who know the value of hard work and effort. Thank you for entrusting this to us and we look forward to partnering with you!!

NWEL PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! My name is Carla Masters and I will be your child's physical education teacher. A quality physical education and skills program is offered to all students at NWEL as a part of their curriculum. I will be using sports skills and activities from the SPARK Physical Education program and the MIEPEC program, along with many other physical education resources. SPARK (Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids) and MIEPEC (Michigan Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum) are both aligned to the NASPE (National Association for Sport and Physical Education) standards.
These programs are designed to be inclusive, highly active, integrate academic and wellness concepts and are fun for all students. Additionally, instructional units are designed to develop students' motor, cognitive and social skills.
Please remind your child to dress appropriately for physical activity. For comfort and safety purposes, they should wear sneakers and clothes suitable for activity.
Physical activity must be done regularly to achieve health benefits. Experts recommend children receive at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Please help your child meet these recommendations by helping them to seek opportunities to be active outside of school.
If your child is sick or unable to participate in physical activities, please send a note prior to their P.E. class. I am looking forward to a fun and active year! If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at 817-4704 ext. 4889.
Thank you!

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Drop-Off
Pick-Up
If you will be picking your child up, please make sure to send a note to the teacher or call the office. If calling the office, please do so before 3:00 p.m. This will allow us to get lists finalized and given to the teacher. If you call after this time, your request unfortunately will not be honored. We will not pull children off the bus for late calls. You will need to meet them at the bus stop. When picking up your child please park in a designated parking spot and not along the drop-off curb. Make sure to bring a photo ID. Parents are asked to wait in the cafeteria until students are dismissed. Students will be dismissed by grade starting at 3:32 p.m on full days, and 2:27 p.m. on Early Release days. When exiting the parking lot please do not turn around in the Lansing Avenue Baptist Church parking lot.
Morning Tardiness
We encourage promptness since tardies affect everyone and disrupt classroom time. One of the most valuable life skills a student can learn from his/her parent/guardian is the responsibility of arriving at school every day on time. Morning is the time when important school news is announced, teachers define the plans for the day, and instructional goals are reviewed and set. The whole tone of a child’s school day is set in the first part of the day.
Main doors open at 8:15 a.m.
School starts at 8:25 a.m.
Students not in their classroom seat by 8:35 a.m. shall be considered tardy.
If the supervisory aides are not present when you drop off your student, they are tardy. Please make sure to come in the office and sign them in.
Students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. will be marked as a morning absence.
Doctor appointments/professional appointments are excused with a doctors note.
Students must be in school at least half of the day, to count as a full day.
Please help support your child in learning habits that will help them be successful at school and throughout life. If you need help or have concerns getting your child to school on time please contact the office. We are here to help.
