A week of school
September 18, 2020
A week of school never felt so good!! Obviously, things are different and students are definitely quieter (so far), but it was so nice to have students back in our building and interacting with staff and each other. I hope you are hearing good things at home and that your students is beginning to re-engage in going to school each day whether it is inperson or remotely.
I wanted to share Mr. Gumina's letter that went out to Webster families earlier today. It shows the power and responsibility that we all have to each other in keeping each other safe and keeping our schools open.
Dear Webster CSD Parents/Guardians,
Our first full week of school is nearly complete. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation as we work together to ensure the health and safety of all students during this school year. We know that it will take some time to get used to remote learning vs. in-person learning, a physically distanced classroom vs. a kitchen table classroom, recess with siblings vs. recess with classmates, and the list could go on. However you have decided to have your child return to school, please know that our faculty and staff support you and your child(ren)’s education during a year like none other.
I remain optimistic about the protocols that our district has in place to keep our in-person students, faculty, and staff healthy and safe. That is not to say that I don’t expect COVID-19 cases in our schools. Just last week a district here in Monroe County announced their first two cases among students. While that is disconcerting, I was very heartened to read the Monroe County Department of Public Health (MCDOPH) conclusions that no other adults or classmates had to be quarantined! Why not? Because everyone in contact with the two students had been masked and distanced so there were no other exposures!
We must continue to be vigilant in these healthy practices, especially as the flu season begins. Thank you to all of you who have worked with your child(ren) on how to properly wear a mask, wash their hands, and keep six feet away from those not in their households. Those practices will make a difference to ALL of us in the One Webster community this school year. If and when our first case is confirmed here in our district, I am confident that the MCDOPH will make the same conclusions that I described above, and any impact to our instructional day will be minimal.
Should you have any questions related to COVID-19, I’d encourage you to call the MCDOPH hotline at 585-753-5555 or email them at COVID19@monroecounty.gov. They can answer questions related to potential exposure, testing, contact tracing, or quarantining, as can your own primary care physician. Above all, please don’t send your child to school if they are sick and be sure to complete your child’s health screening via the PikMyKid app or website when they are learning in-person for that day. This screening continues to be of critical importance to all of us.
Thanks again for your cooperation as we head into week three of the 2020-21 school year. I’m grateful to our parents and guardians (and I just love seeing your kids again)!
Sincerely,
Carmen Gumina
