Family Newsletter
August 28
What a great first week back to school. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the back to school block party. There were some items that are actionable for some tweak that we could make for next year. I truly do appreciate the feedback to help us refine and improve the event. Thanks to everyone who was able to attend the block party, thanks to everyone who came on the first day to the welcome breakfast, and thanks to everyone for being patient and following directions for arrival and dismissal.
The teachers and students had a great first week back! We all enjoyed reconnecting and building new relationships with one another. We had lots of getting to know you games, read alouds, and outdoor play to get to know each other. Thank you to families for reaching out to teachers with questions at the start of the year. Teachers will also share information via classroom and/or grade level newsletters so be on the lookout for those as well.
I have personally been so impressed by everyone. All of our staff has gone above and beyond to help ensure a smooth transition into the start of the new year. Our staff has taken on lots of new learning and they are trying new things in the classroom and this is going to lead to positive outcomes for all of our students. I'm grateful to work with such dedicated educators who put our students first in all things.
As a district we are focusing on staff wellness during professional development and throughout our time together. I would like to be sure to reinforce the message that I have shared with our staff regarding work-life balance. Teachers start time is 8:10 am and they finish at 4:00 pm. Many teachers also have meetings and/or clubs before or after school. Our communication expectation is that staff respond to calls/emails within 24 hours during their working hours. Each teacher has a plan time during the day that they can respond to things as needed. I am also going to do better with trying to disconnect each evening and weekend to model this for our staff. I will still be checking email regularly during non-school hours and will be available if an urgent situation arises. Thank you for helping us to support our staff with their wellbeing.
Please reach out at any time to share any questions, concerns, or ideas. I am here to help and support you and your family. Thanks for all you do to help keep our students and staff safe.

Student Tee Shirts for '22-'23
The shirts are designed by our teacher of the year, Dr. Grayson. Each year the TOY designs staff shirts. This year we felt it would be cool to get kids involved because of our belonging data being low. The kids shirts match our staff shirts with only the word "learning" being different, on the staff shirt it says "kids". Both the staff and student shirts are nice and meant to bring unity to our school community.
As a school, we are beginning to have specific goals as classes, grade levels, building, and district as part of our strategic work plan. We hope that we can use the shirts as recognition to others when we’ve hit a goal. For example on our announcements we will recognize a class that hit a goal and share that the class is wearing their shirts that day. Then when we see these students in the hall, café, playground etc we will know they’ve hit a goal and congratulate them on their work. All student shirts will be white rather than a different color for each grade level.
Please click here to submit your child's tee shirt size. Thanks!
New Lunch Initiative

The federal program allowing all children free breakfast and lunch has ended
For the past two years, funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture made it possible for the Kirkwood School District to provide breakfast and lunch free of charge to all students. This funding has expired, which means that free meals will no longer be available to all KSD students (effective May 26th, 2022).
Families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals must fill out an application for the 2022-23 school year in order to receive free or reduced price meals. Even if you have filled out a form in the past, you will need to reapply for the 2022-23 school year.
Filling out a form could result in additional financial assistance for your family. In KSD, those benefits include:
50% reduction in student technology fees
50% reduction in middle school and high school annual activity fee
50% reduction in bus pass fee
KHS students qualify for testing and college application fee waivers
If you are not sure if your family qualifies for free and reduced-price meals, you can see FAQs provided by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education here.

KSD Nutrition on the Weekends
KSD N.O.W. - Nutrition on the Weekends Registration for the 2022-23 School Year
Kirkwood School District offers the KSD N.O.W. program to supply an array of nutritious, non-perishable meals and snacks for children experiencing food insecurity, free of charge. During the 2022-23 school year, boxes will be distributed to families at their homes via delivery in a discrete and caring manner once per month.
If you wish for your child(ren) to participate in the program, please complete the form below. Only one form is needed for all the school-aged children in your family, but please include information for each child on the form below. This information is kept confidential.
Once your child is signed up, they will receive boxes of food each month of the school year or until you no longer wish to participate. If your form is received after the deadline each month, your child will be eligible to participate in the program the following month(s).
If you have any questions, please contact program coordinator Emilie Lytton at ksdnow@kirkwoodschools.org. All inquiries will remain confidential.
If you have unmet food needs for your family, including older children, babies, or toddlers, please contact KirkCare at 314-965-0406 or dial 2-1-1 for referrals to food banks and social services in your area.
In order to receive support through KSD N.O.W. for the 2022-23 school year, please complete the online registration at https://www.kirkwoodschools.org/KSDNOWRegistration.
ALL FAMILIES MUST COMPLETE THIS FORM TO PARTICIPATE IN KSD N.O.W. Students who currently participate will not automatically be re-enrolled.
To find out more and how to support, we welcome your financial contribution to keep KSD NOW running to support our students. We continue to accept online donations via our online giving campaign.
