A Message from the Principal
I hope everyone enjoyed a restorative Thanksgiving break that allowed for both resting and connecting with loved ones. We are entering an important stretch of the school year: students are continuing their learning in classes, winter sports are starting up, and upcoming concerts and exhibitions mean students have a lot going on in and out of school. This month, we are excited to celebrate the hard work our students have done and are also ready to support them during a traditionally trying time of year.

COLLEGE BOARD RECOGNITION
Sebastian Aftanas, Telisho Anderson and Veronica Castell have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as Commended Students. At Spotlight this week, each student was congratulated and received a Letter of Commendation from Souhegan and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation - which conducts the program. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students (out of the 1.5+ million) who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
In addition to the NMSQT Commendation, Telisho Anderson also earned the National African American Recognition Award from the College Board, recognizing his outstanding academic performance!
Congratulations Sebastian, Telisho and Veronica!

SENIOR PROJECT
At this point in the Senior Project process seniors should be continuing their research, meeting weekly with their mentor, and communicating with their outside expert. Students will have their next checkpoint, on January 11th after school to review their Applied Piece Proposals. Please check in with your seniors about their project and reach out to their mentor with any questions.

Get To Know SHS
Meet the wonderful and talented staff members of SHS!
Kathy Maddock
What is your role at Souhegan?
Social Studies teacher (currently teaching World Studies and Humans as Subjects, also teach AP Human Geography).
How long have you been with Souhegan?
This is year 26!
What do you love about your job?
The energy that students provide. I can go into a classroom feeling tired and come out feeling completely energized. I mean, teaching can be a tiring job, but it also somehow can make you less tired.
What do you like to do outside of work?
My side hustle is coaching cross country skiing. I am in charge of a competitive ski club (think travel soccer for a skier) that is based out of Dublin, New Hampshire. Our club has athletes from many of the surrounding towns and schools, including Souhegan!
If you were given one wish what would it be?
End global warming and bring back snowy winters!
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?
Ralph Waldo Emerson: “The reward of a thing well done is having done it.”
