PVE New-Weekend Edition!
PVE-Where A Great Beginning Lasts A Lifetime!!!!
Week Ending of April 30th, 2016
This past week has given us much to reflect upon. The Global Day of Desing presented the PVE campus with a leap frog into multi-age classrooms, honoring student voice and choice, risk taking, learning from failure and seeking to put each of us back into the seat of a learner. I am very proud of this staff for accepting this challenge and grateful for the rewards it has presented to our school.
I sat in with Lauren and Tammy as they conducted some K-4 student interviews reviewing Global Day of Design. One of our second graders had this to share:
Tammy: Tell me about Global Day of Design J_________
J: Well, it was fun, no it was more than fun. It was something in which we learned to not stop trying. We had to keep trying different things and seeing what worked and what didn't work.
Tammy: With this month's lifeskill being Perseverance, it sounds like you had a lot of that!
J: (smiling) Yes... you know each time we tried something different, we got new information. We then used the new information to make it better.
As simple as those words may be, I admit they are profound and immeasureable.
The week progressed and we then moved on to see Lauren gracefully lead us through ISTEP. Many of you have complimented to Dana and I in your appreciation for Lauren's calm presence through any situation. She hit another Home Run with ISTEP. Thank you Lauren!
Finally, much like the opener to the Wizard of Oz we saw our school family hunker down for a tornado. I was humbled by your grace, leadership and comfort towards our students during this time. It truly humbles me! Thank you!
I sensed staff quickly knew this was not drill. As I made constant rounds, I quickly heard stories being read from each of our sections of school, from upper to lower. Literacy came alive and gave comfort to our weary little ones as they stayed in position. I sensed a calmness and confidence from our entire school. Our office team responded like this situation was an every day occurrence.
As school concluded, I had to move quickly through the parent pick-up to allow a particular bus to depart to run their early route. Our traffic line was a lengthy serpent wrapping around upper playground. As I made my way to the bus by preschool exit, I was greeted by cheers, high fives, "PVE rocks", "you guys are incredible".. and the like. It made me want to sprint as our parents made me feel like a superhero! I need to share this as you didn't see it, or know it, but it was truly meant for you. I am the signaler and you carry the ball for the team. Again, very humbling and thank you! I will conclude on our April tornado thoughts with one of our notes from a parent:
While the tornado touched down in the field across the county from our home in Rock Bridge, my middle schooler and I were in our basement praying for our daughter and all the other children and staff at PVE. Not knowing where the storm was headed (TV and phone were out for a bit), I felt totally helpless about our child at school. When our third grader *** came home, she told me in a calm manner how the warning was handled, how Mrs *** read to them and Mr *** and other teachers were making sure they were in the correct positions. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping my child calm and safe as could be in such a scary situation. She was totally fine and had no idea how close the funnel cloud had come to her home or school. I hope you realize how much we appreciate such loving teachers and staff. Next year will be our last year at PVE which is bittersweet. Thank you for all you do each and every day and even more so on unpredictable events like this.. It means so much to see the genuine concern and love for the children.
Gratefully

Global Day of Design Reflection-From Kathy Drake
Thank you all for your help to make our first EVER Global Day of Design a huge success! The students seemed to enjoy all of your design challenges. In order to always look to improve on our practice, I have created a short survey about Global Day of Design. Please take a few minutes to provide me with any feedback and suggestions you may have. Again, thank you so much, this day would not have been possible without all of you!

The grade level who submits their Words Their Way inventory spreadsheets to Kathy first will receive a prize in their mailbox!
*************************************************************
It is that time of year again to assess for Aimsweb, Words Their Way , and Fountas and Pinnell.
Please try to find time during the week of May 2nd to give the Words Their Way Inventory to your class and score these inventories. If you need another copy of the inventory or have a question about which inventory to give, let Kathy or Carly know.
You will find a legal sized spreadsheet in your mailbox with the data from the previous inventories. We ask that you record each student’s total feature points and final spelling stage on the legal sized spreadsheet and return it to Kathy Drake no later than Monday, May 9th! We ONLY need the completed spreadsheet. Thank you in advance!
You can check out the ZCS Universal Literacy Screening if you need a refresher on what you need to assess.
The Rooney Report due date is May 11th.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you for all you do,
Kathy and Carly
